monthly council meeting. The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council was held yesterday, and was .attended by Crs H. Macandrew (chairman, Miller, Stewart,. Cross, Irvine, Hellyer, Brunton, and Robertson. BROAD BAY CEMETERY. ~ chairman reported that he and tae engineer had made an inspection of the entrance to the Broad Bay Cemetery, i, Jt turning point were made a little mrtner up the road the requirements would he met, the cost being about £i7, •a -T. decided to carry out the work ** nr done for that cost, Mr Davis was authorised to take charge of the allotment of sections in the cemetery. HOOPER’S INLET ROAD. The. engineer reported on the cost of widening the Portobello-Hooper’s Inlet road. It was decided to call tenders for the widening- of the road, and the question m disposing pf, the metal was left to tne members for the riding and the engineer. ■ ■ ° IMPROVING HALL ENTRANCE. The chairman reported on an inspection which he had made at the entrance to the hall at Macandrew Bay. He thought that a concrete channel about' six inches wide and 30 feet long would preyent water from going into the hall. He bought that the wprk should be done. .The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and the engineer. CREEK DIVERSION. ~Mr. T.. M. Ball, chairman of the No, 17 District Highways Council, wrote statlnß, that the work of diverting the creek and constructing a culvert at Macandrew ■Bay had been estimated to cost £597, of which the board had agreed to contribute £297. This meant that the council was now asked to provide £3OO towards the cost instead of £468, as previously mentioned. . It was decided that further ■ investigations should be' made by the chairman and Cr Hellyer. PORT CHALMERS WHARVES. The town clerk, Port Chalmers, wrote asking the council for its co-operation in the matter of preventing further increases in the charges to ships loading farm produce at Port • Chalmers. The position was that the Otago' Harbour Board had increased the charges since purchasing the Port Chalmers wharves from the Government, and the charges-were to be further increased under the Harbour Board’s new by-law 'No. 20, until the charges at Port Ghamers were equal to those at the Dunedin wharves. His council, was asking that the by-law insofar as it affected Port Chalmers should not be put into operation. After some discussion it was decided that members were not sufficiently informed to express any opinion, and the letter was received. CLASSIFICATION OF ROADS. Consideration was given to’a report on the classification of roads, which had been prepared at the request of the Commissioner of Transport, and the following was • finally = agreed to:—Main highways (Beach road. High road, and Tomahawk road)., 10 tons', first class; Portobello to Harrington Point, Portobello-Cape Saunders, and Riddells to Hooper’s Infet roads, 6 tons, third class; all other roads, 4 tons, fourth class. GENERAL. Mr Bell forwarded a copy of the Main Highway Estimates for -1030-31. They included the following:—Dunedin-Fortobello high road, £1390 (£2 for £1 subsidy);" general maintenance, £940 (£2 for £1 subsidy) ;. maintaining paved section, £240 (free grant); Dunedin-Highcliff, via Tomahawk, £SOO (£1 for £1 subsidy).— Received. The accountant, Main Highways Board, notified that the expenditure of £267 19a Cd (£2 for £1 subsidy) on the DunedinHighcliff, via Tomahawk, road and £271 Iss lid (£2 for £1 subsidy) on the Dun-edin-Portobello high road had been authorised.—Received. .Mr W. H. Couston wrote on behalf of nine owners of cottages on -the Ross Point road asking that-the road should.be improved.—The matter was left in the hands of the engineer. Mrs L. Riddell applied for permission to erect a small shed at Portobello next to the parking area. l —The request was granted, the shed to be built on runners. Mr J. C. Wilson, of Company’s Bay, yaited on the council to complain regarding the gates being left open on the road through his property.—lt was decided to put the gates in order and to'affix notices warning the public that the gates must be closed.—lt was, also decided to ask the property owners above Mr Wilson's on the Company’s Bay camp road to remove gates and fence their properties within six months. It was decided to make the, prices for sections in the three cemeteries on the Peninsula uniform. The 'charges "agreed' upon were as follow; Bft by 4lt, £1 10s; Bft by 6ft, £2 ss; Bft by Bft, £3. It was pointed out by the chairman that’this was the fourth meeting at which there had been no representative of the Heads Riding.—lt was decided to hold an election for a new member on October 29, nominations to close on October 22. The chairman reported that he had received word • fsom the. Highways Board that there was no possibility of the road from Portobello to Harrington Point being declared a secondary highway. There, would be no more secondary Highways declared in the district this year. RANGER’S REPORT. The ranger (Mr A. H. Hall) reported that during the month of September ho had found 36 head of cattle, three horses, and one ram, including three head of cattle belonging to Cr Robertson, in the different ridings. Mr Hall- tendered his resignation from the position of poundkeeper, ranger, and dog tax collector as from October 31. It was-decided to call for applications for the position, ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer reported as follows for, the month ended September 30:— Tomahawk Riding.—The water tables have been cleaned on the Valley road and ■general surfacing work has been done on the high road. A six-inch pipe is being laid to drain the low-lying portion ot Glen street to the Lagoon. Seventy-five cubic-yards of screenings have been spread ea the Tomahawk highway. Highclifl Riding.—The water tables have been cleaned on the District road and. on the High road. Sandymount Riding.—The road widening contract on Riddell’s to Hooper’s Inlet road is approaching completion. Water tables have been cleaned on the High road. The surfaceman has spent; one day on the Riddell’s : to’ Hooper’s Inlet road. Portobello Riding.—The metal on Gill’s Corner to Gravesend road has-been raked in and rolled. Patching has been done on Lewis’s road and on the Portobello to Harrington Point road. Broad Bay Riding.—The re-forming and metalling of King George and John streets in Broad Bay Have been completed, as well as the portion ,of Harbour terrace recentljr graded. Two culverts on the Beach road have been replaced with larger ones, and one new culvert laid. ■ Beaconsfield road, in Portobello township, lias been scarified and the surface graded, metalling is now proceeding. The re-forming of Nicholas street is now in progress. W*ter tables have been cleaned bn Wilsons road. The Beach road has been scarified where necessary, and 30 cubic yards of metal spread. . North-East Harbour Riding.—The prading m of metal and patching have been doue on the Beach road.
