COURT STATISTICS.
CIVIL AND CRIMINAL RETURNS. During _ the quarter ended September 30, 44 civil and 77 criminal hearings ■ were held by the stipendiary magistrates at the local Magistrate's and Police Courts. The number of civil plaints entered was 1524, compared with 1535 for the corresponding quarter of 1929, the amount claimed being £20,772 lie (£10,229 11s 6d previous quarter). Of that amount £10,923 19a lOd wag recovered. The other returns in the civil business were: —Distress warrants issued. 111 (98); judgment summonses issued, 270 (328). The number of criminal cases heard was as follows: —Males, 889 (815); females, 67 (48) —making a total of 956 (863). During the quarter 60 males and 14 females were dealt with in the juvenile court. The fees collected totalled £2006 12s 6d (£2206 12s), made up as follows: —‘ Civil fees, £1366 7s (£1387 ss); criminal fees, £226 9s 6d (£183); fines. £4os 6s (£636 7s); licensing fees,- £5 10a.
