THE ANGLING SEASON.

•A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. Since the opening day of the angling season fell this year in the middle of the week, the number of anglers who have been able to Indulge in the • sport has, so far, not been large. Reports from various districts, however, indicate that, m view of the unfavourable weather conditions, a very successful opening has been experienced. A party fishing the Gatlins River on the opening day secured 50 trout between Sharpe’s mill and . Houipapa. Three parties fished above Tawanui, and it is reported that two of these met with no success whatever. The river was showing a tendency to rise, and the weather wag cold both on andy eaterday. The Tomahawk Lagoon has been very popular, but the results obtained have been varied. On Wednesday morning one angler secured an 81b trout and a 21b one on the worm. There were many fishermen on the water in the evening, and many fish up to 21b were taken, all kinds of baits being, used. It is considered to be a good sign that the fish are already rising to the fly. Those who have patronised the contour channel have also met with varying results. One angler secured a limit basket early on Wednesday. Another landed 13 nsh, and smaller baskets were numerous. I , s ..l epol 't e< l that the fish were in fair condition. The Silverstream has ■ been patronised by several local fishermen, but only poor sport has been obtained. There is little water in this stream at present. On the Leith one angler landed eight nice fish early on Wednesday morning, .they were in good .condition, and the indications are that this water will continue to give good results.
