WINTER SPORTS.

OTAGO ALPINE SPORTS CLUB. A mooting of those interested in alpine sports, tramping, and climbing was held last evening in the Y.M.C.A, buildings. There was a good attendance, the majority being young men, and the meeting was presided oyer by Mr R. W. Marshall. The chairman, in outlining the object of calling the meeting, said that Dunedin was lacking in the matter of catering for winter sports. Some of the other centres had tramping, climbing and ski clubs. There was a body in Wellington known as the Tararim Tramping Club, and a ski club in Christchurch. Both served a useful purpose.. In Dunedin they had the Otago Tramping Club, but there was room tor an alpiue sports club. The new club would start off in a small way, but it was hoped to build up a body which would oner the young men of Dunedin someth m the way of winter recreation that was worth while. It was hoped in the near future to explore some of the regions in Central Otago, where some excellent ski grounds were available, and where new tracks could be opened up. Ski-ing was a delightful sport, and would, no doubt, become popular with the young men of the city. If the proposal to form a club met with the .approval of those present, it would be necessary for a resolution to be moved to that effect. Mr F. Boreham moved that a club should be formed, to be known as the Otago Alpine Sports Club. The motion was seconded by Mr A. R. Lucas, and carried. The rules and constitution of the new club were then read by the chairman and approved. The principal objects of the club will be to encourage walking, climbing, and mountaineering in New Zealand; to open up and develop resorts and arrange facilities in that direction; to protect native flora and fauna and the natural features of the country; to assist in the formation of new and help in the upkeep of existing and future tracks and routes; to assist where possible in meeting at a reasonable cost the needs of trampers and campers at such places, and to arrange any other facilities in connection therewith, and to provide for outdoor sports, club houses, grounds, and courses.
