CANCER RESEARCH CAMPAIGN

THE NEED FOR FUNDS. EFFORT BY MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION. All the world over, cancer’ is regarded as one of the deadliest enemies of mankind, and every year it takes its toll of life in increasing numbers. Huge sums of money are being spent m cancer research work, and, though good progress has been made, additional financial assistance is necessary, and in order to supplement the funds of the Otago branch of the British Empire Cancer .Research Campaign, the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Aseo. elation is planning on a large scale a grand exhibition and carnival to be held at the Drill Hall, Wilkie road, in November. The project is being taken up enthusiastically by those concerned, and it is anticipated that the public will be treated to one of the brightest and most attractive carnivals ever held in Dunedin while additional interest will be created by comprehensive displays by our pro'minent manufacturers. In the ordinary course of events, the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association would not have held its exhibition of New Zealand-made goods until about March next, but, on being approached by the executive of the local Cancer Research Campaign, they at once decided to abandon the idea of an exhibition in aid of their own funds, and to run a grand carnival and’exhibition for the benefit of the local branch of the Cancer Research Campaign. Undoubtedly the energy and enterprise of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association will assist materially in making the scheme a success, and credit is due to that body for the generous and humanitarian spirit it has displayed. Most of us still have vivid recollections of the fun and gaiety provided by the big Exhibition. To a large it was the event of a lifetime. " It will be the endeavour of the promoters of the manufacturers’ carnival and exhibition to provide amusement and entertainment on the same lines, though necessarily it will be on a smaller scale. November, therefore, promises to be a gala period in Dunedin and residents and visitors may look forward to being regaled with entertainment reminiscent of Exhibit!, i dayn—a distraction, no doubt some will think, that is badly needed these days of commercial gloom and depression. Several meetings have already been held by the promoters, and a strong and representative executive, with conveners of the various committees, have been formed as follows;—President, Sir Louis Barnett, C.M.G.; vice-presidents—the Mayor (Mr R. S. Black), Sir Thomas Sidey, Sir Lindo Ferguson, Messrs C. \V. Rattray, Richard Hudson, and J. Sutherland Ross; chairman of executive, Mr James Hogg; deputy chairman, Mr Arthur Barnett; Central Executive — Messrs P, R. Sargood, W. E. C. Reid, and C, B. Smith, representing Cancer Research Campaign: and Messrs W. G. Kindley, T. Somerville, H, Speight, representing the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association; conveners of committees— Industries, Mr W. G. Kindley; Decorations, Mr J. L. M'lndoe; Lighting, Mr J. Y. Love; Space Letting, Mr F. W. Clcavin; Music, Mr J. 6. Jeffery; Amusements, Mr A. Smellie; Publicity, Mr H. J. Lousley; Catering and Refreshments, Mr C, B. Smith. The Otago Women’s Club, which will take an active part, will be represented by Mrs Blues and Miss Williams. The title is Manufacturers’ Exhibition and Carnival, and it will run from November IB to 20 inclusive, and it will be held at the Drill Hall, Wilkie road, Dunedin. It was contemplated holding it at the Arcade, and though the proprietors kindly agreed to grant the use of the buildings and ground free, it was considered that the Drill Hall would bo the most suitable. The City Corporation, which is most sympathetic towards the object of the campaign, will co-operate where ever possible, and it is felt that with such a strong and responsible executive and committee throwing themselves whole-heartedly into the scheme, quite a successful carnival and exhibition will eventuate.
