MINISTER’S JUBILEE.
REV. GEORGE HEIGHWAY. The Auckland Congregational , Men’s League met on Thursday at the Mount Eden Congregational Church to do honour to. the Rev. George Heighway in this, the jubilee year of nia ministry (says the Auckland Star). The building had been tastefully decorated by the ladies of the Mount Eden Church, the bowls of daffodils and Iceland poppies making a charming- scene. There were 60 members and their wives present, and at 8 o’clock the president, Mr J. Gordon Smith, escorted Mr and Miss Heighway to the seats of honour. Mr Smith spoke of the high esteem in which Mr Heighway is held throughout New Zealand. For 21 years he laboured in Dunedin, and for the past eight years m Auckland. Mr Smith read a sheaf of letters and telegrams receive’d from all parts of the Dominion, sending greetings and congratulations and eulogising Mr Hcighway’s record of service. Other representatives of the Auckland churches also spoke. A very fine musical programme was presented, the artists contributmg being; Mrs and Miss Broberg, £ianoforte selections; Messrs H. King, ; oad B. Jackson, instrumental trio; Mr -H. Fisher, vocalist; and Mr Hawking, humorist. A beautiful bouquet and a box of chocolates were handed to Miss Heighway, and Mr Blott, on behalf of the league, presented Mr Heighway with an easy chair and a smoker’s companion. At supper time, a golden cake, mounted with 10 golden candles, was wheeled in by the ladies, and Mrs Lediard, in a vary happy little speech, asked Mr Heighway to accept it as a token of affection. After the usual ceremony, Miss Heighway cut the cake. Mr Heighway responded on behalf of his daughter anil himself. v A letter was read from the United Congregational Church at Dunedin, referring to the faithful work of Mr Heighway dffring the 21 years he was in that charge, and adding that as a memorial nia late devoted wife and fellow helper he had presented the church with a valuable manse.
