CHATHAM CUP, SOUTH ISLAND FINAL. A WIN FOR WESTERN. \ Before a fair attendance of spectators at Logan Park on Saturday, the Western Club, of Christchurch, defeated/ the Port Chalmers team for the honour of represeating the South Island against the North Island in the final of the Chatham Cup, which will be played at Wellington next month. The game, which. resulted in a score of two goals to nil, was fast and exicting throughout, but the play on the whole was not .striking exhibition of the code. The visitors were slightly the better aide, displaying better ball control and placing than their opponents, and the result about suras up the difference between the contestants. -. Lack of shooting ability was evident on both sides, but the Western goalie had more serious shots to contend with than the local custodian. Mr W. P. Smith, of Duncdih, was the referee. 'The teams were as follow: , ~ WESTERN (Black), G. Colville, W. Kelly, E. Colville, W. Whittington; G. Roberts.) A. Ellis, F. Bridgens, S. Ellis, C. Falloon, A. McMillan, T. Nelson. PORT CHALMERS (Green and White). Camp, Evans, W. Albertson, A. Ives, W. Ives, Montgomery, C, Ives, Latta, Hutchison, Holden, E. Albertson. THE PLAY. Western kicked off facing a strong breeze, and immediately forced a corner kick, which was placed over. Port'Chalmers's left wing* opened up play. Holden sending out to E. Albertson. The latter centred nicely, . but- Hutchison's - header went by.. Port Chalmers continued to make the* pace, forcing' two. unsuccessful corners, a,na Nelson, Western’s left-winger, made a good run until brought up by W. •Ives. C. Ives received, and a long drive to goal 'just missed. Up and down play followed hntil E. Albertson and Holden, showing good combination, had. the visitors’ defence in. trouble, Kelly having to give away a corner to clear. The kick was without advantage, and W. Ives, receiving from a goal -kick, had another try at the goal, but the ball skimmed the bar. Aided by l the wind Port Chalmers held play in _ Wester ns half, but were unable to get within striking distance, the fine defensive work of Roberts, the centre-half, : : repeatedly saving. his side. Whittington was’ prominent in’ breaking the opening up play ,to -Bridgens; who was' unable to get past Albertson, but Roberts swung plky across to the opposite wing, M'Millan centring back , to-goal,'. where the inside men failed to connect with* the ball. Western settled down to steadier play, and Albertson, the Port Chalmers back, miskicking.. to the /.centre, gave M'Millan-an opening, He' w&s too slow, and Evans cleared. The last-named was playing well, end a strong 'clearance let Holden away on the left, and with Hutchison receiving the- ball in • front,; a goal appeared,, likely until smart - work by Roberts, again averted' the danger. _ Port Chalmers , now hemmed Western in the latter’s half, but the aimless kicking of the local players spoilt. their chances ox scoring. W. Ives, at centre-half, was the omy one to use the -wind, and -a fine drive was well fielded by Colville, in the Western goal Shortly after, the same player again tested? the goalie, Colville neatly! tipping the ball over'the. crossbar for a corner. .Two corner, kicks were re* pulsed; and Kelly; Ifefc the ; Western ■ for* wards away, offside spoiling the: movement. A spell! of even play followed, the visiting . backs, ■ Colville, - Kelly, and Roberto, showing good defensive work. Western now: settled, down to more combined play between the .forwards. Camp being forced to come outtoclearon one occasion. , Latta, missed with a shot at goal for Port Chalmers and Western came down the centre,, the defence fauino to stop the movement, and. a-ehot by Falloon • saw Camp clfiar wdl* * In. fiavlM another shot by Roberts, Camp was penalised for steps. Port Chalmers , cleared, and rushed play to the -’other end, Colville, the full-back, clearing, but Holden again secured . possession, and_ just missed the goal - ; Good : combination . on the Visitors’ left, with Nelson-Jisplaying neat footwork, had Port Chalmers; > defence beaten, and a cross from tafr winger was taken up by Bridgens, who scored with a close shot: Western'!, .Port .Chalmers nil. . Until half .time, Western showed better play, the low, pawing of thekalve* letting the : forwards away repeatedly,..but EyanS, the Port Chalmers right back, was sound op defence, and there 80 change in the score at 'half - ‘ Immediately from the kick .on‘ in the second half Latta had a shot, the, ball going wide, and Falloon was ipromment m opening up play to Port Chalmers area, where Montgomery kicked over toclear a shot from Bridgens, With the drpppmg of the wind both sides were swinging the ball about, but the Port Chalmers players lost chances through- slowness-in shooting. Roberts .'was. placing the -, ball • nicely, for his fdrwards, and troubling the Port Chal> mere backs, but M'Millan missed witlrft close shot. Port Chalmers’s attacks lacked method, l and ' the team was not showing its usual dash, W* Ives beat Roberts in a tussle for the ball, and; «ent C.lves away on the right, the wirwer shooting over. : -Then a miss' by .Kelly gave Hutchison, a chance, but ttya alert Roberts relieved the danger. Following give and take play. l Falloon went > down, the centre, finishing with-a shot [Which struck the upright, Montgomery clearing, from the rebound. Port Chalmers re-, plied frith a movement by C. Ives and Latta, who beat-the defence, and a good cross went begging owing to the, insidu forwards not being in position, and Kelly ckarad. E; Colville, the Western left back, received a cut above: the ejo and retired, for' a short period. The-wiW kicking - for the Port Chalmers .players gave them little advantage. C. Ives, at centre-half, was playing well, however, and letting, Latta away; .A great was then losVby bad passing. Whittingtons clearance was only momentery. however the Port Chalmers players rushing the ball back, and forcing Colville, in gOal. to save at the expense of a Vomer, which Port Chalmers failed tonudh home. The local team appeared to be more fit than the Western players, who were not. showing the play of the. first, half. A. Ellis saved a centre and senl, the forwards away, a corner resulting, from which the. ball was placed over. Port Chalmers’s hustling tactics were worrying the visitors, who were hard pressed when W. Albertson drove the ball down tho left wing, 1 and only the safe, keeping _of Colville, in goal, averted the danger. Again Port Chalmers. attacked, when a fine shot by E. - Albertson skimmed the bar- Following a throw, in, A* Ellis got possession, and opened an attack un Port a goal, and, through a mis-header by Montgomery, S. Ellis secured in front, and had no diffioulay in netting. Western-2, Port nil. This set-back had its effect on the Port Chalmers players, and Western had no difficulty in holding its opponents for the rest of the spell. Two corner kicks to the visitors were unsuccessful, whilst Nelson had a shot which went high over. Following another attack, in which Bridgens and S. Ellis were prominent, the Port Chalmers backs cleared strongly, allowing Holden and E. Albertson to break through the opposition. E. Albertsons shot gave Colville difficulty in clearing. Just on time Western made a strong attack, Camp fisting oiit a'low shot, bub the ball was netted by the on-rushmg forwards. The goal was disallowed, and the free kick relieved further danger for P<yrt Chalmers, time being called soon after, with the result; Western ,2 goals. The Blues cleared the advance, and from that time on maintained a steady pressure. Old Boys being hemmed in and having many anxious moments.' The home side lost several good opportunities through now
