THE ECLIPSE EXPEDITION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—l am directed by the council of the Hawera Astronomical Society to inform you that the society is prepared to donate the' sum of flve pounds (f 5) to the New Zealand Astronomical Society (headquarters Wellington) towards the financing of the proposed expedition to take observations of the coming eclipse of the sun. In view of the fact that the financial stringency is restricting assistance from the Government, there is grave risk that a New Zealand expedition—the • only British, one possible— may not eventuate* and we suggest that the kindred societies, and those of-the public who can, will also help to finance this worthy scientific work. —I am, etc., . S. Wall. lion. see. Hawera Astronomical Society.
