(Fbom Oue Own Cobeespondent.) LAWRENCE, May 22. THE WEATHER. The long continued drought can now bo said to be broken in this district. Rain fell on Tuesday night and continued with cold rain showers during yesterday. A cold snap was experienced with a cold biting wind this morning, and there was a covering of snow on the Waipori hills facing the town, FOOTBALL, The second series- of ■ flag matches was played on Saturday between Lawrence and Coal Creek football teams, on the local ground. After an even game the visitors won by 8 points to 3. The points now stand: Miller’s Flat- 6, Coal Creek 4, Lawrence 2, and Roxburgh East 0. LADIES’ HOCKEY. The Lawrence Ladies' Hockey Club played its first match on the local ground yesterday against the-Heriot Club. The climatic conditions. of the ground were not conducive to very, good play. ,The Heriot team won by 7 goals to 2. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Lawrence Branch of the- Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the club rooms. Mr J. Girvan (president) occupied the chair. It was decided to make application for a grant from the Poppy Day funds to assist loc jJ returned men, out of employment. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr F. Jones: vice-pre sident, Mr D, W. MTntosh; secretary, Mr E. S. Knight; collector, Mr R. J. Forbes; exeeutive—Messrs W. Christie, J Cameron G. R. Talboys. R; J. Forbes! and R. L. Anderson. FARMING NOTES.’ In these days whenf cereal growing on the farms' has had to take second place to sheep farming, it is pleasing to record that one farmer in this district has received excellent returns from his labour. Mr- S. Williams on his farm Earnout, iuapeka West, had a return of 60 bushels or wheat to the' acre from 24 acres, and also flO bushels of oats to the acre. In the early days the Tuapcka West district was noted for ite wheat-raising, and the above returns demonstrate what good cultivation can still produce.
