(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILTON, May 22. LADIES’ GOLF. A ladies’ bogey competition will be played on the Toko Club's links on Saturday afternoon, the draws being as follows:—Mrs, Vidal v. Miss Farrell, Mrs Wilson y, Mrs Gray, Miss' Hislop v. Miss M. Wilson, Miss Brown v. Miss M'Laren, Mrs Mirams v. Mi’s Hitohon, Mrs Robertson v. Mrs Sumpter, Mrs Milne v. Mrs Wethey. The draws for non-handicap players to play a medal match over nine poles only are:—Mrs Leckie v. Mrs Edgar. Miss Russell v. Miss Combe. Miss R. Wilson v. Mrs Groundwater, Mrs Jenery v. Mrs F. Thomson. FARMERS’ UNION DEBATES. Another debate between Milton and Berwick branches of the Farmers’ Union has been arranged, the Milton branch having accepted a challenge. Choice was given by Berwick branch of two subjects: (1) “ Does moral or money power exercise the greater influence on the human mind?” (2) “Is too much time spent on sport in New Zealand? ” The subject of sport has been accepted, Milton to support the affirmative. The debate takes place at Berwick on Thursday evening, June 12. A debate is also being arranged between Milton and Waitahuna branches of the Farmers’ Union. WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED EXSERVICEMEN. With a view to providing work for some district unemployed ex-servicemen, the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association has accepted the generous offer of a large block of manuka-covered land, and this week installed an engine and sawbench to cut the manuka into blocks suitable for household purposes. It is hoped to thus provide work for at least four ex-servicemen on a profitable wage-earning basis, and without expense to the taxpayer. TOKO RIVER BOARD. A return presented to the bi-monthly, meeting of the Toko River Board showed the satisfactory credit balance of £238. As the result thereof the hoard intends to reduce the rates on lands in its area within Milton and portion of Bruce County to 3-9ths of a penny on A class land, 2-9ths on B class land, and l-9th on C class land, as compared with |ths, Id, and Jth during recent years. ROYAL HEALTH SOCIETY. A canvass for the benefit of funds of the Milton branch of the Royal Health Society has just heeu completed, and resulted in £SO 19a 0d being raised in subscriptions. and £l9 13s in smaller donations. In addition, donations have been received of sheep, lambs, potatoes, and produce, the sale of which will augment the funds. THE WEATHER. The long spell of dry weather experienced in Tokomairiro district has now completely broken. Since last. Monday intermittent rain showers have fallen, and the climatic conditions have heeu decidedly wintry. The rainfall recorded at Milton this week is as follows:—Monday’s reading, .lin; Tuesday, .02in; Wednesday, .3in. - Heavy showers fell last night, accompanied with bitterly cold winds, and the hills this morning were covered with a light coating of snow, CHURCH DIAMOND JUBILEE. The sixtieth anniversary celebrations of the Lovell’s Flat Presbyterian Church will commence on Sunday, May 25, and the programme comprises a full series of religious and secular functions. The morning service wfll be conducted by the Rev. S. F. Hunter (professor at Knox College, Dunedin), and the evening service by the Rev. P. B. Fraser (a former minister of the Lovell’s Flat Church I. A young people’s jubilee rally service is arranged for the afternoon. For Monday afternoon a conversazione will he held in the church ground, followed with old-time social in the evening, at which the musical programme will be provided by Toko Picsbyierian Church choir. The celebrations are to be continued on Sunday, June 1. when services will he conducted by Dr E. N. Merrington (Knox College, Dunedin), and terminate with a social evening at Pukcawa Church on Monday, June 2. LADIES’ HOCKEY.
