SIR DOUGLAS MAWSON

‘ REPORT ON EXPEDITION. WHALING GROUND LOCATED. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, May 21. (Received May 21, at 10 p.m.) The report of Sir Douglas Mawson on the Australian and New Zealand Ant-’ arctic research expedition says it can be definitely asserted that off the coast of Enderby Land there’exists a very valuable whale fishery. “It would appear that the Norwegian exploring vessel Norvegia located this whaling ground simultaneously with ourselves, and from that fishery millions of pounds’ worth of products will be recovered in the next few years.” The report adds that exhaustive hydrological data had been secured, and about 1000 deep sea soundings were recorded, while biological studies were continued throughout the cruise on an extensive scale. The report also deals with the expedition’s experiences in the pack ice, after which Sir Douglas Mawson states that he charted a new area which he designated. Macßobertson Laud, together with lands further west known as Kemp Land and Enderby Land, the whole of which had been claimed for the Crown.
