OTAGO CANISTER WORKERS

NEW AWARD GRANTED.’ FEW NEW FEATURES. The new award granted by the Arbitra- ' tion Court in respect to the Otago Canister Workers’ Union has been released by the ' court. There are few alterations from the conditions embodied in the award which has just expired, the only substantial changes being an improvement in the rates of wages for boys and youths and a restriction of the proportion of boys and youths to adult workers. The salient features of the new award are as follow: — 1 Forty-eight . hours shall constitute a week’s work.- Work shall cease at noon ' on Saturday. WAGES. The minimum rate of wages for adult canister workers shall, be 2s per hour. Piecework shall not be permitted unless a log is mutually agreed upon between the employers and the union. OVERTIME. All work done outside of or in excess of 48 hours shall be considered overtime, and shall be paid for at the rate of time and a-half for the first three hours and double time thereafter. When overtime is worked tea money (1 3 6d) shall be allowed each worker called upon to so work. HOLIDAYS. The following holidays shall be observed:—New Year’s Day and the day following. Good Friday, Easter 1 Monday, Labour Day, Sovereign’s Birthday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Al] time worked on Sunday or on the foregoing holidays shall be paid for at double time rates. When any holiday shall be gene-rally-observed on any day other than herein prescribed the provisions of this award shall apply to such substituted holiday, BOYS AND YOUTHS. The minimum wage payable to boys and youths under 21 years of age shall be:— Per Week. For the first year .. I 0* o' For the second year ~ 17 6 For the third year .. 116 o • For the fourth year .. 22 6 For the fifth year -.. 210 0 Thereafter, the minimum wages as fixed for adult workers under clause 2 of this award. The proportion of boys and, youths shall be one boy or youth to every adult worker. For the purpose of determining the proportion the adult workers taken into account must have been employed bv the employer in the establishment in which such boy or youth shall be taken on tor the preceding six calendar months ™ at least two-thirde full time: Pro vided that this clause shall not apply to truit preserving works during the months of December, January, and February, or to meat preserving works during the months of May, June, and July
