FORBURY PARK TROTTING CLUB.

UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF MEETING A special meeting of the committee of the Forbury Park Trotting Club -was held yesterday afternoon for th'e purpose of completing the arrangements in connection with the totalisator meeting which is to be held on. June 5 and 7 to raise funds for the’ relief of unemployment. ■- The president (Mr B, S, Irwin) occupied the chair,, and there were also present Messrs James Mitchell, G. J. Barton, H. Halliday, W. J. L. Goughian, R. Telfef, A. Clark, John Mitchell, and J. Richardson. The acting chairman of the Programme Committee (Mr Barton), which had met previously, submitted the proposed programmes for the two days, it was • recommended that the big race for the first day should be the Awarua Handicap, of 450sovs, the distance to be two miles, in harness, and the class 4.34. The big race for the second day would be the Birthday Handicap, carrying the same stakes, and for the same class. Each race would be the fourth on the card. The programme for the ’ first day, exclusive of the big race, would be as follows;—The Woodside. Handicap, replacing the New Zealand Sires’ Produce Stakes; Bayfield Handicap, of 150sovs, harness, for unhoppled trotters, 3.45 class, one mile and a-half; Domain Handicap ; of 175sovs. harness, 3.39 class, one mile and a-half; Beach Handicap, of- 200sova saddle, 2.l7‘class, one mile; Woodside Handicap, of 200sovs, harness, 3.17 class, one mile and three furlongs; St.' Clair Handicap, of 200sovs, harness, for unhoppled trotters, 4.49 class, two miles; Renown Handicap, of 200sovs, harness, 3.32; class, one mile and a-half; Plying Handicap, of 225sovs. harness, 2.48 class, one mile and a-quarter. The second day’s programme provides for the same stakes and classes as on the first day, with the exception of the Rpyal Handicap, the second race, which is over two miles for 4.52 class.—The programme was approved. Mr : Halliday said he would like the .question of the dates re-discussed, as he considered that the club was making, a mistake in bolding the meeting so soon after the gallops at Wingatui. It was essential that a profit should be made, and be thought that prospective patrons should be-given time to recover from their losses at Wingatui and their expenditure at the,Winter Show. He would suggest that June 26 and'2B would be more suitable dates. —Mr Clark supported . Mr Halliday’s contention.' While he realised, that the followers of trotting and galloping represented two separate sections of the community be did not think that the club should do anything that might interfere in any way with the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting.—Mr Barton pointed but that the horses would not be in training at the end of June; moreover, there was a big percentage of people who would not’ attend a • galloping meeting, but would patronise Forbury Park.—-The discussion then lapsed. • Iti was decided that nominations should close at 5 p.m, on May 28, handicaps be declared bn May 30, and acceptances close at 5 p.mi. on June 2. ■ Mr Telfer referred to the proposal, to divide the proceeds equally between the Otago Hospital Board and the Dunedin City Council, and. asked why St. Kilda Borough Council should not receive a proportion of the amount. Practically all the traffic, to and from the course would be carried on the borough’s roads, and as a councillor he.was prepared to guarantee that the council, if given a grant, would expend the money in -wages ■ for unemployed, who would be put to work, improv-ing-the' roads in the immediate vicinity of Fdrbury Park, .particularly Victoria road;—The chairman said that the conditions had; already, been laid down, but the City Council could be’requested to expend a proportion of its share on the roads mentioned by Mr Telfer.- , THE DATES APPROVED. ■ Shortly after the meeting the secretary (Mr C. R. Caffin) received word from the Trotting Conference ■ that the; dates had been approved.
