WOMAN'S LONE FLIGHT
ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA. PLANE REACHES BAGDAD. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) BAGDAD, May 0. (Received May 10, nt 1 a.m.) “ When a woman wants to make her mark she must do something rather better than any man has ever done it.” Thus Miss Amy Johnson, heroine of the lone flight from London to Australia, explained her motive to Reuter’s correspondent' on her arrival at Bagdad. She hopes to reach Karachi on Saturday, two days ahead of Mr Hinkler’s time. While flying from Aleppo to Bagdad, across the Taurus Mountains she was compelled to land in an unknown spot in the desert. She confessed that sh“ was rather scared when she heard dogs barking, in the distance, but she saw no Arabs, She had a revolver ready in case of emergency.' She waited for two hours while a sandstorm abated, then she cranked the propeller, took off, and miraculously found the Tigris, landing at Bagdad. The staff of Imperial Airways replenished the machine with fuel and made a slight overhaul of it while Misi Johnson, who was very tired but happy, went for tea and sleep.
