NIGHT EXPRESSES.
CONSISTENT SUPPORT. Recently, thS Minister of Railways (Mr W. B. Taverner) announced that he had no intention of discontinuing the night expresses on the south line. Good support for these trains is still offering, in spite .of the commencement of what is regarded as the slack season for travelling. Passengers arriving in Christchurch by the ferry steamers on Sundays find the train at night a great convenience, and the week-end night expresses are used a great, deal by commercial travellers. A compilation has been made of the average number .of passengers travelling by the expresses in either direction in.the past 12 weeks, the .total on’ the trains at the various stations , quoted being approximately as follows: Trains Travelling South. • Week Sundays. Days. Leaving Christchurch ~ 140 50 Leaving Oamaru .... 100 50 Leaving Balclutha .. 65 30 Trains Travelling North. Leaving Balclutha .. 80 50 Leaving Oamaru 80 . 50 Christchurch.. 75 50
