Recognition of a gallant act in a mins is contained in the announcement that the King has awarded the Edward Medal to Mr Joseph Wilson. Mr Wilson, was working in Murton Colliery, Durham, when a fall of roof occurred in another part of the pit, completely burying Mr Ralph Chisholm and partially burying Mr David Stevenson. Mr Wilson ran to the place and stopd over Mr Stevenson, shielding him from further falls for 35 minutes until rescuers extricated the imprisoned man.
