FORCED’ON BOARD SHIP. (Special to Daily Tiiies.) s CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. Six firemen, members of the crew of the C. and D. Line steamer Port Sydney created a scene at the port this afternoon, when they resisted violently being put on board a launch which was*to con- \ e .v them to their ship, then awaiting their arrival in the stream. The men were rounded up from the streets and hotels and escorted to the waterfront. They were all under the influence of liquor and they carried among them proli uding . from their pockets several bottles of beer. On-reaching the launch they refused to go on board, demanding to know what the launch fares would be and who would pay to' place them on board. A desperate struggle was necessary and the men had to be dragged into the boat by the police. No sooner were one or two placed on hoard than they .tumped ashore again. One policeman had ,to make use of his baton to keep back the men who were trying to get away. The position looked bad for a while and the laimuamj was offensive. Finally the men were placed on the launch. When the launch was 100 yards from the wharf one man jumped overboard and made for the shore, but he was picked up hv his mates.
