DEEP-SEA FISHING.

A SUCCESSFUL SEASON. THIRTY t6NB OF FISH. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 8. The conclusion of a most successful season’s deep-sea angling at Whangaroa was reached on April 30. The Whan garoa Swordfish Club’s Records reveal most interesting results gained by anglers from New Zealand, and abroad, ma ny of whom had remarkable and thrilling experiences. No doubt the most exciting adven ture was that of Mr Alsid Bowyer, on the launch Dione, when a mako shark jumped, aboard and played havoc with the fittings in the cockpit before it couid be despatched with a whale spade. Two of the largest fish, both black marlins, which scaled 7501 b and OGSIb respectively, were captured by Mr R. B. Watson, of Walton. Mr Watson had long and exciting tussles with both of these monsters. Other big fish landed this season are as follows:—Largest thresher shark, rofiu' T 1 EH' B (Hamilton); thresher. 5841 b, J. Rees George (Devonport); largest mako, 6201 b, F. C. Kelly (Auckland) j mako, 4721 b, S. Ellis (Hamilton). S. Ellis landed 42 fish, which is the greatest number to fall to the road of any one angler this year. Some lady anglers also had good results. Prominent among them was Mrs P. C. Mullions, of Whangaroa, who landed lx ” 8h - She s had the honour of being the first lady to land two fish in one day at .Whangaroa—a mako of 3611 b and a swordfish of 2C4lb. By April 30 there had been iccorded 264 big fish, in weight nearly 30 tons (65,7181 b).
