WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.

The monthly meeting of the Dunedin central branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Tuesday afternoon in the Baptist Sunday School Hall. Mrs Hiett presided over a goodly number of members. Mrs Didham conducted devotional services, making this a prayer service. Two new members were initiated, and one member was received from another union. All were enthusiastically welcomed. 1 ■ Mrs Dick sent grateful thanks for a letter of sympathy. As a result of a jumble sale held in April it was made possible to contribute £2 2s to the funds ot the “ Day Nursery ” and £3 3s to the fund for founding a chair of obstetrics. A member subscribed £1 Is to the fund, and other members had collected £5 for it. A letter was read from Mrs T. E. Taylor, _ Dominion president, asking for a special effort in raising funds for the Million Shilling Fund for headquarters, and the organising fund to provide means for two more organisers during the'next year. A petition for the abolition of compulsory military training camps was circulated. • Miss M'Andrew, a delegate to the convention held in Timaru, gave a most comprehensive and interesting account of the work_ done there, stressing the need for sustained effort during the coming year. Special mention was made of the work of the young people’s branches, the Y’s, the Loyal Temperance Legion, and cradle roll The chief object of the W.C.T.U. is the abolition of the liquor traffic, but many other branches of work are taken up, each with the aim of making things better, especially for the rising generation.
