VIOLENT EARTHQUAKES
PARTS OF BURMA SHAKEN. OVER FIVE HUNDRED KILLED. MANY BURIED ALIVE. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) DELHI, May 6. (Received May 7, at 1.45 a.m.) It is feared that over 600 are dead in Pegu, Burma, as the result gf an earth quake, which was followed by fire and a tidal wave from the rivers Pegu and Sittang last night. Railway and telegraphic communications have been cut off. Medical aid is being rushed by road. Fifty people were killed and over 200 injured at Rangoon, where the shocks were the worst in living memory. Many buildings, including the High Court and the Catholic Cathedral were severely damaged. The majority of -the casualties occurred in the mosque and in a five-storey building, which collapsed, burying all the occupants alive. The population fled panic-stricken from the houses and spent the remainder of the night in parks and open spaced. RECORDED IN NEW ZEALAND. (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 6. Dr C. E. Adams, the Dominion seismologist, stated to-night that, the shock had been recorded at the Kelbum observatory, and that the record was a very fine one. A further examination of the film will be made to-morrow.
