AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS

THE LEICESTERSHIRE MATCH. GREAT SCORE BY BRADMAN. A CENTURY TO RICHARDSON. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, May 5. With two wickets down for 50 Bradman (9) and Kippax '(11) resumed Australia's first innings in warm sunshine. Leicester has the local reputation of, being a tricky, wicket. During the first half hour of the morning mists left the ground damp, and the bowlers had to use sawdust. The conditions favoured the batsmen, as the outfield was faster than on Saturday. The visitors had lost five wickets for 305 when rain stepped play for the day. Following the early dismissal of Kippas and M‘Cabe, who failed to get going, Bradman and Richardson became associated in a partnership yielding -170 runs. Coming together when four wickets were down for 88, these two saved the side from a possible rout. Richardson played freely throughout, but Bradman was more restrained than usual, his first 25 occupying 100 minutes. He then livened up, andthe total reached 100 after 125 minutes’ play. Richardson punished anything that was loose.

The Leicester bowling was varied and accurate, demanding the batsmen’s respect. Both gave difficult chances when in the forties, Richardson made the partnership worth 100 by Hitting Armstrong for a 6, and the 4000 spectators present after lunch saw the South Australian hit the fast bowler, Shipman, for a 6 and a 4 in succession. He reached the coveted century before Bradman, despite the latter’s 95 minutes’ start. Bradman’s three figure? appeared in the next over, and then Richardson was caught through failing to connect properly with one from Geary. There was a delay of 20 minutes at the tea adjournment owing to rain. Bradman, upon resuming, went after runs, pasting the bowling. The third 100 took only 55 minutes. At 5,25 rain drove the players off the field, and stumps were, drawn. Details:— LEICESTERSHIRE.

THE MATCH ABANDONED. ' . LONDON, May (5. (Received May 7, at 0.30 a.m.) There was heavy rain last night and this morning, and the match has been abandoned. . ■ • HIGH PRAISE FOR BRADMAN. ' LONDON, May 0. The Daily Telegraph says: “Bradman won every heart immediately by his confidence and the suggestion of immense physical strength. It may be debatable whether he is another Irumper, but he is a batsman of the highest degree.” - , The fine score of 230 registered by JJon, Bradman, the young New South Welshman, against Worcestershire, in the opening match of the Australian eleven’s tour m England, places another feather in the cap of this brilliant young bats man, whose rise to world fame has been meteoric (says a writer in the Dominion). In the cable messages this week it was mentioned that Bradman’s score was the highest ever made against Worcestershire, He holds a more enviable distinction, however. He is the holder of the world’s record for the highest score in first-class cricket* this achievement having been made when he scored 452 not out in the Sheffield match between New South Wales and Queensland, at Sydney, early this year. And now m the first game of'the tour in England he is credited with a double century. He has not wasted any time in getting going, and the indications-are that, with a continuance of this 7 form he may exceed Victor Trhmper’s record’ of 2570 runs for a season by a member of an Australian team in England.
