MEETING OF COUNCIL. DUNEDIN TRAINING COLLEGE AND SOCCER. ■ (Peb United £eess association.) WELLINGTON, May 6. The Council of the New Zealand Football Association met 'to-night. The cable from Australa cancelling the tour by a New Zealand team was read, and the hope was expressed that - the differences in Australia would soon be reconciled, and that both amateurs and professionals would come under the control and legislation of one body. A letter was received from Sir Charles Statham, who accepted the office of pre-. sident of the New Zealand Association. The Manawatu Association wrote asking for an extension ■ of time for Chatham Cup entries, as their season did not open until May 3. Wellington and Auckland also desired an extension, and it was decided that entries close definitely on Monday, May 19. It was reported that eight entries had been received from the South Island, the largest entry received from the south, and that about 20 entries would be forthcoming from the North Island. The hope was expressed that two entries would also he forthcoming from the j West Coast. ’ Challenges for the Brown Shield are to be invited from minor associations as early as possible. Several requests were raceived for footballs for schools, and the Finance Committee was authorised to purchase a limited number and distribute them ' through the associations. The Otago Association wrote stating that it had been brought to its notice that the principal of the Dunedin Training College was virtually debarring students from playing the game of ‘V Soccer.” He advised students that tliey-would be disloyal to the college if they played in any branch of winter sport other than Rugby football or hockey.—Strong exception was taken by the Management Committee to. the attitude of the principal towards other branches of sport, and particularly to- ‘ Soccer, J and the following- resolution was carried:—“ That this matter be reported to the Minister of Education, calling upon him to see that the young teachers are set a better example of freedom in the matter of games in this free country than that set them by the principal of the Dunedin Trainmg College m attempting to block Soccer.” The letter further said that the committee felt that the council would not tolerate any action on the,part of the principal ° f the Training College which would debar young men from exercising their right to choose which branch of healthy sport they should take up in the winter months, and asking the council to have the matter looked into with a view to sport at the college being placed on a better footing.— The secretary said- he had written asking that the principal should be interviewed and hm rephes taken dopn jn writing, so that the council could.act on the matter. —lim letter was approved, the chairman stating that they must have specific cates before going to the Minister. in regard to reinstating the Football Association trophy competition on*the original lines, the chairman stated that m f USt f a unanimous decision on befnS. * ° f i the f ° Ur major associations before a change could be made..
