GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH.

COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting" of the Greeri Island Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. T. Smellie), Crs J. L. Miller, T. Tomkins, J. Passmore. G. Orange, A, Logie, D. Stewart, J. G. Lindsay, arid T. M'Ahan. . ENGINEER’S .REPORT. The engineer (Mr F, J. Williams) reported as follows for the month jof April: —The paving of Lookout Point and Brown’s Hill section with hot-mix bitumen has been completed by the Highways Board, so that the whole of the main highway within the - borough boundary is now permanently paved. The surface of the Green Island section of the Taieri Mouth highway has been maintained by grading and is in good order. The accounts for the six months ended March 31, 1930, have been made out, and it is found that the expenditure has amounted to £sl 17s. Tenders have been called for the new bridge over the Kaikorai Stream, and will close on May 24, for consideration at the next Works Committee meeting.

An engineering survey has been made and plans prepared for the construction of Victoria place with a footpath on one side. It was found that the shape of the road, which has been constructed with slag from "the ■ ironworks from time to time, would require to be inaterially altered, arid the' removal of the slag, of course, would be an expensive matter, having to be done by hand. Proposals generally are to form a roadway 33 feet wide which would include a footpath six feet wide and the usual 12 inches for channelling. The cross fall of the road would be one in 26, land I submit plans for the information of the council. I estimate the cost of the carriage-way at £lO2 19s, which includes metalling and blinding, and the cost of the footpath with wood curb at £2O, making a total of £122 19s.

I have examined Lookout Point deviation, and find that with the erection of the fence it is perfectly safe for traffic, and, there does not seem to be any reason for any further work here.' I have also examined the drainage into .the abbatoira property near Ross’s corner, and find that at present we have three discharges of storm water, one six-inch pipe- and two three-inch pipes. I understand that some exception is taken to the discharge of this water on to the land) but I have to advise that this has existed for many years, and consequently a right has been acquired for acting in the manner we do. Should any alteration be made, we wnnld be willing to assist, but the cost of the same should be charged against the' abbatoirs.

In connection with a letter received from Mr Jenkins with regard to assistance in cleaning out some heavy material from the Kaikorai Stream I recommend that the assistance be granted. Some, discussion arose over the final clause in the report, and it was decided that the portion of the stream referred to by Mr Jenkins should be inspected before the council took any action in the matter. The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. -

The Works Committee , Recommended that the engineer report on the question of the council declaring Princes street s public street, and that he also report on the questibn of the subdivision of land and the formation of road as submitted to the council by Messrs Christie and Christie. The committee further recommended that works to the total value of £193 9s be put in hand. The report was adopted. WATER AND LIGHTING COMMITTEE. The Water and Lighting Committee recommended that an application from J. Sanders for water services at Concord, be received, and that temporary service he granted until water extensions in Concord are carried out, The v report was adopted. Ninetfeenv applications for position of sexton-had-been received, : and' the committee recommended that Charles Cunningham be appointed sexton,-and that:Gi Wilcocks be employed until the vacancy caused on the staff by the transfer of ,C. Cunningham is filled. The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. 'A letter from the Depart- , ment of Lands «.nd Survey, Wellington, notifying that Brighton Domain Board had been ordered to pay the Green Island Council the sum of '£3 3a towards costs of the commission set up to consider proposals of Brighton Domain Board, bad been received, and the committee recommended that the Brighton Domain Board be requested to forward £3 3s to the Green • Island Council as requested.
