TARATU COAL MINES.

These mines are situated about two miles north of Kaitangata, .and a, railway line, eight miles in length, connects them with the Government railway line, at Lovell’s Flat, and over this line the firm’s output of coal is hauled by their own locomotives. As a rule two trips per day are run. The proprietors. of these mines have had a lot of boring and prospecting carried put on the property during the last year or two, and this has proved so satisfactory that a new mine is to be opened up in some lower seams of. proved good-quality coal. The first drive, a dip of one in five, is already started and down some distance. A .second drive will later be commenced. The area of ground proved must contain some millions of tons of coal.
