Through falling into a vat of boiling water at the Mountain Road Dairy Factory, Eltham, on April 12, Leonard Kilpin (26 years), single, employed as first: assistant, suffered .euch severe scalds that he died in the, hospital four days later. No one witnessed the accident, but in the hospital the injured man told his brother that his foot slipped, and. he fell backwards into a six-feet by two feet vat of boiling water two feet deep. When the accident occurred Kilpin did ,not tell anyone, but some tiine later, when unable to bear the agony of his injuries any longer, he informed the manager that 1 h© ’had been scalded. He reached the hospital in a delirious state. He recovered for a time, but toxaemia developed, and. the case, ended fatally. ~ The coroner this afternoon returned a verdict that death was due to toxaemia, following scalds accidentally sustained. As‘a rider he added: “In my opinion factories should have some better system of providing boiling water other than leaving if in open vats.” DEATH FROM INJURIES. The driver whs careful and gave warning at intersec.tion's. Deceased appeared to have stepped back in front of the car. ’ Two ladiea who haw the accident also said that deceased and a friend with her appeared to hesitate and step back, and there was nothing to show that the motorist was at fault. The coroner remarked that these ladies had come forward in consequence of what they saw in the papers, and it would have been better if, instead of- ; communicating with interested parties, they had gone to the coroner direct. Then there would be no_ suggestion that the evidence was not quite disinterested. His verdict was that deceased died from injuries as the result of being knocked down by a car driven by Leo Joseph Smith. NGAHAURANGA GORGE ACCIDENT i (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 6. The inquest into the death of Mr and Mrs Norman W. Cook, who were killed when their motor car, after, colliding with 'another-, fell into a creek below the Ngahauranga Gorge road on the afternoon of April 13. was resumed to-day. Alfred Edward Storey (driver of the cat which collided with that driven by Mr Cook) said he . was passing anothercar when he saw Mr Cook’s car approaching round a bend. Mr Cook’s car was then only a few yards ahead, and bad not previously been in view of witness. Mr Cook was on his right side of the road, and it looked as if he had plenty of room to pass witness. Witness was in the centre of the road. The impact of the two cars was not severe, and witness stepped immediately. When witness a ßg“ted Mr Cook’s car had fallen over the bank. "Witness bad been driving for 18 years. George Rigyard. (motor mechanic) said that when Cook’s . car was recovered it was found that the steering gedr was jammed to a right-hand lock. Examination showed Jins to be due to a mechanical defect. It appeared to have been caused by a blow. It appeared that someone had been working on the affected part before the accident. The car could have been driven straight forward despite that damage, but could not have been turned to the left. The inquest was further adjourned until Thursday.
