(From Oud Own Correspondent.) ■ LAWRENCE, May 5. THE WEATHER. The rainfall at Lawrence for April was .53in, which fell on nine days. For the corresponding month last year it was .7in, which fell in five days. The dry conditions still continue, and it appears that a record is going to be established in this district, as old residents cannot recall another period of three months at this time of the year with such a. small rainfall. On May 1 a few showers were experienced, but only sufficed to replenish tanks and give the. surface of the soil a soaking. _ Some of the mining claims have necessarily had- broken time through lack of water, THE FRUIT INDUSTRY. ■ ® le Railways Department here has been Lusy_ during the last three Weeks transporting the shipment of apples going Home, A total of 66,860 cases has been handled to date. The cases sent by each shipment from the respective districts are as follow:—Per Ratanga—Miller’s Flat 14,700, Roxburgh 2054, BeaUmdnt 73; per Zealandic—Miller’s Flat 16,813, Roxburgh 2054, Beaumont 2034; per Port Napier— Miller’s Flat 17,984, Roxburgh 6595, Beaumont 1463. FARMERS’ UNION. The annual meeting of the Waitahuna branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held last week. Mr T. Corry (president) occupied the chair. The only meetings held during the year had been m connection with the affairs of the Otago Power Board. Several combined meetings had also been held with the Lawrence branch. The experimental plots laid down by the Agricultural Department had not been conducive to favourable results owing to the unusual climatic conditions.
