At 9.30 a.m. yesterday morning one ot the Borough Council’s tar boilers at the corner of Itchen and Severn streets, boiled Over and commenced to blaze vigorously' A second boiler alongside was in danger of catching fire, but was removed in time. The fire brigade turned out; and quickly subdued the outbreak, but not before the boiler had been damaged to the extent of between £3O and £4O. GOLF. J.P.’e, -Theodore Edwin Calder were charged with beipg found without lawful excuse in tbe enclosed yards of the railway engine sheds, Oamaru, but in circumstances that did not disclose the commission of or the intention to commit any other offence. The accused pleaded guilty, and Senior Sergeant Scott stated that the man had been found at 3.46 a.m. by Constable Moore sleeping in the sand house of the eD ft' n , e shed. -He resisted arrest, and called for help, but when arrested admitted sleeping out for several nights. As a matter of fact, two constables had been looking for him under instructions, as the police knew he had been sleeping out somewhere, but did not know where. They had received complants, and on Friday night had received a complaint that ne had looked through the window of a residence in Ribble street, where two children were sleeping. < The accused admitted that he was in the sand house; but denied knowledge of, the Kibble street affair. He was wait?ng in thg’railway yards till the morning, be said,oon the chance of getting a job. He was not absolutely without tneans, and had 3s 6d. He did not get a bed because he was getting short of money, and had not had a bed for nine or ten days. He wae not in the habit of looking through windows, ' . The Bench intimated that it was not prepared to believe the accused's statement, and added that he had apparently decided to make himself a pest in the town - The accused was sentenced to one month s imprisonment. ’ BOWLING. The play on the closing day of the Phoenix-Bowling Club took the form of mixed foursomes, and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. During the past couple of- days three bicycles have been damaged through being -run over by cars. ’ While proceeding north in Thames street' a telegraph messenger was overtaken by 1 a Ford. car. and tne back wheel was completely,wrecked bv the car running over it. The messenger escaped injury. A cycle shop owner also had his repairs list added to by inadvertently running over with his car the wheels, of a couple of cycles that had been Jett lying too far out on the road. SCOTTISH SOCIETY. The weekly dance held by the Scottish Society at the Scottish Hall continues to attract a large number of young people, and IS gaining in popularity as the winter months draw near. Mr W. Miller wah M.C.. and Mrs Sherwin’s orchestra played excellent music. ' KAKANUI PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. The annual harvest festival service was held in the Kakanui Presbyterian Church on Sunday, when there wde a large congregation, The church was beautifully decorated with large quantities of flowers,, trult, and produce, which are to be disposed of on Wednesday evening. -The Rev, p. C. Rennie preached an appropriate harvest sermon, and made feeling reference to the death of Dr T. Harrison, for many years a resident of Kakanui. The more time one spends at the exhibition the more one realises the excellence of the ivork of the local artists, and the beauty ot the pictures loaned for exhibition, those from the permanent collection of the Canterbury Art Society. In the Wellington section are two outstanding paintings by John Gully, “ Alanapoun and Southern Alps,” with another by the same painter, “ Mountain scene, in the Canterbury section. Five pictures from the brush of R. Smith are good examples of original work. “The Road, Poerua,” is a pleasing pastoral scene, and “ Storm, All Day Bay,” finishes a strong contrast from the darkness of the storm clouds and the sunswept headland of the middle distance., NORTH OTAGO RUGBY UNION. The weekly meeting of the North Otago Rugby Union was held last night. Mr G. B. Stevengon presided. The secretary’s action in forwarding footballs on the usual terms to the Kakanui,'Herbert, and Teaneraki Schools was approved. St. Kevin’s College forwarded £4 12s 6d, representing the proceeds from the sale of season tickets.—Received with thanks. Transfers Were granted to W. Elliott from Ciutha to Athletic, and to E. The monthly meeting of the Oamaru Athenaeum Committee was held last night. Mr J. M. Wilson presided. The Book Committee tabled 49 volumes of fiction, four of general literature, and 250 populap books, which had been returned rebound and in good order. Several newspapers had been placed on the files and magazines on the table. Miss Hayward’s resignation as librarian was accepted with regret, and a resoluF on of appreciation of her services durphst 1/0 years was carried. The deputation which waited. on the Borough Council in regard to financial assistance for the institution reported that it had been favourably received, but no reply waa yet to hand. It was reported that some of the improvements suggested by Mr Bell, librarian of the Christchurch Library, had been carried out, and further suggested improvements were being conisdered.
