PICCADILLY FOUNTAIN.

BACK TO THE CIRCUS. (From. Ottb Own Correspondent.) LONDON. March 27. . Sir David Murray, ex R.A., has suggested that the Shaftesbury Memorial, with the famous Eros Statue, should be .transplanted to Green Park, a plan that has the approval of the Royal Academy. There are others who maintain that the fountain was designed by the sculptor solely, for the spot on which it stood. It was a thing of beauty in the midst of the great city’s traffic, its in Piccadilly Circus (the cussion is beside the point, as an Act of Parliament ensures that it should be replaced in Piccadilly Circus. The Act was passed seven years ago—the London Electric Railway Act, 1923. It authorised the company to remove the’ memorial temporarily to facilitate the execution of their works and provided tor its re-erection in Piccadilly Circus (the company’s works being -completed) “to the satisfaction of the London County Council in such a position as may bn agreed upon between the London County Council and the City (of Westminster) Council, or, failing agreement, ns may be determined by an arbitrator to be appointed on the application of either party by the president for the time being of the Board of Trade.” ' . The actual position the memorial will eventually occupy in the circus has not yet been decided. Certain work is still In progress beneath the island site, and oven when this is completed a further period will elapse while traffic experiments are carried out. The Local Government Committee is urging expedition, and believes. that the delay before Eros can return is nearly at an end.
