FIRES.
OLD BUILDING DESTROYED. (Per United Peess Association.) NAPIER,’ May 5. " Fire this morning partly destroyed the old fire station, the property of the conn-, cil. It was insured for £BOO in the Alliance office. The building was occupied as a shirt factory by G. W, Arnold, and by two families as a residence. Superintendent Riddell fell through a skylight., The extent of his injuries is not known. GAS HOUSE IN DANGER. (Per United Press Association.' WELLINGTON, May 5. An extraordinary fire occurred at the railway gas house, Lambton, quay station, this morning, when six containers totalling 15,000 ft of gas were affected. The men say that the flames apparently shot into the building from outside. One man was somewhat scorched, and rushed outside with hia clothing alight, but was not seriously hurt. The brigade came on the scene, but had to confine its efforts to keeping the fire to the containers themselves.
