FIRES.
BLAZE AT AWATOTO. t HOUSE COMPLETELY DESTROYED. (Per United Press Association.; NAPIER, April 1. A ■ seven-roomed house at Awatoto, owned by Mr S. Harris, and occupied by Mr J. Jenkins and family, was completely destroyed by fire late to-night. Mr Jenkins was sitting rending in the kitchen and his wife was in the same room, and it was discovered that the front of the house was ablaze. They only had time to seize their child from its bed and make their escape. Mr Jenkins was able to move bis car from a shed, whicli, however, was saved, but nothing was able to be taken out of the house. Awatoto is beyond the fire brigade boundary, and there is no water supply. The direction of the wind and the efforts of a bucket brigade, just .prevented the adjoining houses from catching fire. The house was insured for £7OO in the Phoenix office, and the furniture for £l5O the office being unknown. P WORKS DESTROYED. # (Per United Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., April 1. Fire this afternoon completely destroyed the Dominion Soap Works owned by Messrs Brill and Barrow. The loss is estimated at £2OOO. and the insurances amount to £I2OO. The outbreak occurred while the workers were in an adjacent building having a cup of tea, and the cause is a mystery. A car in the building, was pushed to safety. Four, tons of resin, three tons of tallow, and nine tone of soap burned furiously for several hours. The brigade could do nothing as the works are outside the borough water zone. A LOCAL CALL. The Central and South Dunedin Fire Brigades received a call yesterday after* noon to a fire which had broken out in some gorse at Shiel’s quarry, facing Forbury road. The fire was eoon brought under control, and no damage to property was done.
