ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SEAMAN FALLS INTO HARBOUR. NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, April 1. Several members of the crew of the steamer Port Napier at Princes Wharf rushed to the rescue of a shipmate, D. Thomas, who fell into the tide when the vessel was ready to sail early this afternoon. They clambered down the side ot the wharf and pulled Thomas out of the water in an unconscious condition. In the fall he had cut his head badly. He had gone under a couple of times -before he could be pulled on to one of the crosstimbers above the water level. There artificial respiration was applied and when the injured hian had regained semiconsciousness he was pulled on to the wharf with a rope. It was found that he had also received injuries to his shoulders, and he was taken to hospital. The Port Napier sailed later for the south. " MAN’S LEG MANGLED. AMPUTATION NECESSARY. (Per United Press association TIMARU, April I. An accident occurred at the Neuchatel Asphalt Company’s plant at Pareora, near Timaru, to-day, as the result of which Andrew Shanks, a married man, residing at Waimate, had to have his leg amputated. Shanks was adjusting a bucket elevator when the gears became engaged and Shanks was drawn up the elevator. One leg was badly broken and mangled. The injured man was conveyed to the Timaru Hospital where the leg was taken off. ivell above the knee, GUNSHOT WOUND IN HEAD. ■ Per United Press Association.; INVERCARGILL, April 1. Harry John Foley, aged 29, single, was found at his parents’ resid-ence with a shot wound in his head, and died on his way to hospital. He is supposed to have been cleaning a gun when an explosion occurred.
