WANAKA NOTES.

.—o (From Our Own Correspondent.) PEMBROKE. April 1. THE WEATHER. A week of perfect weather, of calm, cloudless days with bright sunshine and a. touch of frost at night; followed the gale of last week-end. A few days ram would be welcome to promote autumn growth, which is at a standstill. BOWLING. Three rinks from Dunedin clubs visited Pembroke on Thursday and played three rinka from the Wanaka Club. Owing to the limited time at the disposal 01 the visitors, only one game'was finished. Hie aggregate eeore was one point in favour of the Dunedin players. The perfect weather experienced and the playing surface of the green were subjects of favourable comment by the visitors. The following are the scores (Dnpeoin names first): — ~., ,_ .' The last Burnett Shield match of the season was played on Saturday on the local domain, The challenger, the Luggate team, was beaten by 104 runs. Batting first, Luggate was disposed of tor s<, R. Collings (14 not out) being the only batsman to reach double figures. Scott and Stewart bowled unchanged for Pembroke, the former securing two wickets for 13 ruus, and Stewart eight for 20. Pembroke made 141. Hobbs (13), Willetts (14), Burden (26), Brooks (18), Trevathan (37 not out) and Bovett (22) were the principal scorers. C. Temple, ton (two for 30), Todd (three for 31), Smith (two for 29), and Gillespie (one for 12) secured thu wickets for Inißgate, DEER STALKING. Messrs John Faulks and Amoß M'Kegg returned from their block on Mill Creek, in the Matukituki Valley, on Saturday. Owing to the mild weather experienced during the month of March, the deer have not yet commenced to travel, and the sight of one so far is a rarity. Abreafc in the weather with some snow in the back country is expected to bring about better stalking prospects. LAWN TENNIS. A team of Queenstown lawn tennis players visited Pembroke on Saturday last to play a friendly game against the local club. The match resulted in a win' for the local team by 11 sets to 5. VALEDICTORY. The members of the Wanaka Presbyterian Church, and friends, met in the Pembroke Hall last Friday for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr W. J. M. Henderson, who has been master of the local school for the past nine years, and who has also been, during his sojourn in Pembroke, a staunch supporter of the church, holding the office of secretary. The Rev, C. M. Sullivan was in the chair, and made the presentation, taking the opportunity of wishing Mr Henderson the best of good fortune in his new district, and regretting his loss' to Wanaka. Mr Henderson suitably responded. The Boy Scouts also presented their late scoutmaster, Mr Henderson, with a small token of the regard in which he was held by them. During the evening items were rendered by Mrs James Faulks, Miss H. E. Maekay, Mr W. Bovett, and Dr Elmslie, and after partaking of supper the meeting closed with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." CHAIR OF OBSTETRICS. Lady Ferguson and Mrs Marshall Macdonald visited ' Pembroke on Saturday evening for the purpose of interesting local residents in the establishment oi. a chair of obstetrics at the Otago University. A public meeting was held in the local hall, when both ladies explained fully the objects of the fund. Their capable and lucid explanations were appreciated by those present, and a local Ladies' Committee was formed for the purpose of collecting this district's quota.
