OAMARU HARBOUR BOARD. The monthly: meeting of the Oamaru Harbour Board was held yesterday morning, there being present Messrs Norman Hayes fchairmad), R. A. M'Dowell \V Wright, J. Duncan, J. A. Macpherson A M'lnnes, and H. Ruddenklau. Speaking of the visit .of the Raranga to the port, the chairman said the vessel had been well handled, and that the work of digCharring wi loading eareo had been carried out efficiently, and the business men were well satisfied. The railway men also did good work. He had to thank Mr Ireland for taking his ..place in an official capacity during the visit ot the H.M.S. Laburnum, and also Messrs Ireland Mid Chlthrje for the information given by them at the regional planning inquiry. They had given their evidence for the welfare of the harbour district in a clear and concise form. The Waitaki Electric Power Board advised that current would 'be available when the capstans were ready. . Th« Harbour Boards' Association wrote in connection with the cost of collecting special rates, that the matter could best be rectified by an amendment of the Act. Mr Macpherson reported that ne had waited on the Auditor-general, who had raised no objection to a clause bemg inserted in the Washing Up Bill, or to a Bill that the original Act be opened tip and an amendment inserted therein. The Auditor-general had agreed to deal with the matter when he next went to Wellington, and had ashed him to take the matter up. The letter showed that other bodies were in the same position as the Oamaru Harbour Board. There might be an objection from other local bodies to an amendment, and the departments had not yet been advised as to what had been carried at the recent conference of local The ha'rbour master'advised as to the purchase of ropes, and suggested that the board purchase ropes of New Zealand manufacture. It was decided to accede to the request, and to call tenders from local ship chandlers. .Mr T. Guthrie was appointed secretary nnd treasurer to- the board as from May The harbour master reported the following" shipping for the month:—l overseas, 1 intercolonial, and 14 coastal vessels of a total tonnage of 15,056 tons. The Raranga had discharged and loaded cargo in four working days. ■ Accounts amounting to £6851 7s 9d were pasßed for payment. Speaking of the regional planning inquiry, Mr M'lnnes urged that the tion of a bridge across the Waitaki River at Black Point should be kept in view. It would improve the district considerably, and if the board could -further the project it would be in the interest of the whole district. About 15 years ago a committee had been set up to go into the matter, and the cost of the Bridge was then stated to be £BOOO. Now the engineer said £26,000. Mr Wright, said he noticed the Timaru people claimed the Waitaki River as the boundary. The Regional Planning Board could call a further conference, and then the boards decision would be final. Mr Macpherson said the decision would be based on the wish of the ratepayers. The chairman pointed out that from the way the Banking fund was increasing the rate would be non-existent, and Mr tfuthne added that the evidence given at the inquiry was not from the rating point of view, but more from the viewpoint of comrounity of interest with Oamaru. After further discuwion the matter lapsed, MAGISTRATE'S COURT RETURNS.
