BRUCE COUNTY.

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held at Milton yesterday, and was attended by Crs D. ftiiAvne fin the chair), A. King, u. Clark H. M- Driver, D. M'Gregor W. J Sheat. W. Bell, J. Johnstone, A. Renton, V. Wilson, and J. Lockhart. CORRESPONDENCE. Mrs M. Pope (Stirling) wrote complaining of the condition of the V°* d ,AY jacent to her property, and asking that repairs be effected.—lt was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the member for the riding (Cr Renton) and the inspector, with power to act . Six residents of the Milburn forwarded a petition pointing out that the culvert on Gold Creek, which had replaced a footbridge, was totally inadequate to carry flood water, whicl in rainv weather was being diverted nom its natural course and scouring the adiacent property, and asking that it no attended to-It was decided that a committee, comprising the chan man, Crs Lockhart and M'Gregor. and the inspector, meet the petitioners on the giound and report at the next meeting of the C J. Johnston (Kaupapa) wrote drawing attention to the state of the road leading to his property, and asked that it be repaired. It was agreed to leave the matter in the hands ot the inspector to report. HIGHWAY MATTERS. Air T M Ball, the Highway Board’s representative on No, 17 District Higiways Council, wrote advising that the board was unable to accede to the council’s request lor a free grant ot £1440 to cover maintenance of the Dunedi n-Inve - cargill Main Highway to March 31, or to increase the subsidy on general mamten ance between Henley bridge and Clarksville Junction. —Received. . ~ Further advice was received from Mr Ball that the board could not make any increase beyond the present rate of subsidy of £2 for £1 for maintenance of the Balclutha-Tuapeka "Mouth Main Highway.—Received.

GENERAL.

An invitation was received from the town clerk, Balclutha, for members of the Bruce Council to attend a meeting convened by the Balclutha Borough Council to consider the Question of the proposed new traffic bridge at Balclutha in all its aspects, particularly that ot the apportionment of cost of construction. The consensus of opinion among members was that it would be advisable for thp council to have notnmg to do with me matter, and the letter was received A letter was received from the town clerk, Dunedin, advising that a meeting of representatives of all local bodies interested would be held in the Council Chambers. Dunedin, on April, 10, to consider the appointment of, joint heavy traffic inspectors.—The chairman and the clerk" Mr L. W. Potter, were appointed as the council’s .representatives at the conference. INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

The inspector (Mr J. H. Bateman) reported as follows on the work done m the various ridings during the month:— Balmoral No. 2 Riding.—One hundred and twelve and a-half yards of gravel have been used in-gravelling the clay road into Glcnthorn Homestead. Good progress is being made with metalling and gravelling contracts in this riding, and it is hoped to have them all completed during April. Crichton Riding.—Maintenance gravel has been spread and a new box culvert put in on Lovell’s Flat-Kaitangata road. Matau Riding.—Two hundred and twentv-eight yards of gravel have been spread on Stirling-Benhar road, 120 yards on Benhar Hill road, and 32 yards on Stirling Hill road. The, gravelling contract on Lakeside to Stirling road has been completed, „ ... Inch Clutlia Riding.—The gravelling work on Smith’s road has been completed, Kaitangata Riding.—The WaronuiCoombe Hay road has been brushed up with the grader and surface work -done on the lower end of the road. On two occasions whilst the grader has been working on the Waronui road tools have been stolen from the tractor tool-box., Glenledi Riding.—Good progress is being made with the metalling on Richards’ road. The earthwork and metalling contract on the Coast road is almost completed. Waihola Riding.—Both the earthwork and metalling contracts on the WaiholaTaieri Mouth road have been completed. Clarendon Riding.—Maintenance gravel has been sperad on the Phosphate road and surface work done on various road?. Mount Stuart Riding—The Adams Flat road has been brushed up with the grader and good progress is being made with the gravelling contract on this road. A good stretch of gravelling has been done on the road between Mr Fletta homestead and the bridge. , Tokomairiro Riding—One hundred and two yards of maintenance metal have been spread on the road between Kincss and the borough boundary. The foljowing tenders were received and dealt with by the riding members and myself:—Contract No. 192; Cleaning portion of Southbridge ‘drain—F. Allan 5s 3d per chain, W. Stevenson 4s 9d (accepted). Contract No. 103: Cleaning portion of Southbridge small drain—W. G. M. Clark 6s 6d per chain, W. Stevenson 4s 0d (accepted. Contract No. 194: Carting 100 yards of gravel from H. Cameron s on to Seed's road—J. G. Leckie Cs 8d per yard, J. L. Hughes 4a 5d (accepted). Contract No. 195: Carting 80 yards of raetai from the borough quarry to Clare street, Tokoiti—J. G. Leckie 3s 10d per yard, W. A. Lilburne 3s 7d. J. L. Hughes 2s 8d (accepted). General account: Rew decking is required on the bridge over Tokomairiro River on the table Hill road, at a cost of £125.

MAIN HIGHWAYS

Duncdin to Invercargill—One hundred and thiry-five yards of maintenance gravel have been spread between Stoney Creek and Balclutha. Thirty-six and a-half days have been spent m grading on this main highway. Maintenance, gravel is required over the greater portion ot this hl Clarksville to Springvale —This main highway has been graded throughout during the month, and 72 yards of gravel spread on the portion which was raised near Glenore. „ , ~, ™ . Balclutha to Tuapeka Mouth.—This highway has been graded throughout, and is in fair order. , . Balclutha to Kaitangata—This highway has been graded and 12 yards or gravel spread during the month; it m m Green Island to Taieri Mouth.—This section of the main highway is m fairly good order. , , Twenty-four, men have been employed on main highways during the month, and have worked a total of 147 days. The report was adopted. RANGER’S REPORT. The ranger reported having impounded 32 head of stock during the month, FINANCE. Accounts amounting to f 2017 IBs 2d were passed for payment.
