CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
HAIRDRESSERS AND TOBACCONISTS’ DISPUTE. AX INEFFECTUAL CONFERENCE. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr W. H. Haggcr) presided oyer a sitting otthe Conciliation Council yesterday for the purpose of dealing with a dispute between the Otago Hairdressers and Tobacconists 1 Assistants’ Union and the emplovers The Assessors for the cmploj m s were Messrs A. S. Cookson, J. Starr, and a M Hcndv. the union being represented V Messrs it W. Batchelor. W. Tibhlos and A. M’Donald. The proceedings proved quite fruitless inasmuch as only unimportant clauses ot the existing award were agreed to. The vital questions of wages, hours of work and the proportion of juniors to seniors, particularly ip respect female workers, were referred to the Arbitration Court. ' There was a long discussion on the question of the scope of the award, which has previously applied to Dunedin.' Oainaru, and Invercargill, in vice, of tiie application of Invercargill for a separate award, the employer!- asked that anv new award that might be made should lie restricted to Dunedin and Onienni. Eventually it was decided to refer the question of snipe, and also the term of I lie pew award to the Arbitration Com I.
