BOXING.

UNIVERSITY TOURNEY. SELECTING A TEAM. The annual boxing tourney, conducted by the Otago University Students’ Association, for the purpose of selecting a team to represent the University at the Easter tournament, which will this year be held at Auckland, was concluded last evening in the Maratna Hall., when the semi-finals and finals were disposed of. There were some good willing bouts, and a fair measure of skill to make the sport interesting, but it must be admitted that the display was not as good as many that have been staged by the students in the past. Mr J. Kilmartm acted as referee, and Messrs P. Young and S. Brown were the Judges, Officials of the Otago Boxing Association were also present and assisted in the carrying out. of the programme. The results were as follows: — BANTAM-WEIGHT. Final. ; C, Lowndes 8.6 beat W. Cowie 9.2. This was the best bout of. the evening to date, both Jumping in smartly from the word “go.” Lowndes pushed his opponent hard, and connected very clearly with both hands. He pierced Cowie’s defence consistently, and the loser had to take a lot of punishment. The pace for the first round was killing, and although it eased in the second, it was fiercer than ever in the last. The bout was keenly appreciated. FEATHER-WEIGHT. Semi-final. R. Keenan 9.3 boat J. Lovelock 9.3. From the start the bout went with a will, aud there was a continual smart interchange of blows. Keenan kept on the offensive consistently, and used both hands with exceptional neatness. LdVs- - was just a shade sluggish on his feet. ■ , Final. R. Keenan 9.3 beat A. Cotter 9.1. This was an inspiring bout, with nothing much between the-contestants. LIGHT-WEIGHT. Final. A Kebblewaite 9.8 beat R. O. Johnson 9.12. Caution on both sides marked this bout, the winner being for the most part the aggrressor. Johnson’s trickines.s however, saved him a lot of punishment., The display was neither fast nor impressive. CRUISERS. ‘ Semi-finals. A. M’Farlane 11.8 beat A. M’llroy 12.1. Lack of training was evident in the performance of each contestant, and the bout developed into a willing but erratic business. The winner had a knack of getting his left home very cleanly, and on the whole easily demonstrated his superiority, G. Batchelor 11,10 beat E. N. Smith 11.7. This was a disappointing bout, the loser discovering that willingness alone does not win fights. Batchelor was always on top. Final. A. M’Farlane 11.8 beat G. Batchelor 11.10, The loser had things all his own way in the first'round, but M’Farlane asserted himself as the fight proceeded. It was a hard bout with plenty of blood. 1 The winner weakened his slightly heavier opponent with frequent punishing blows to the face and then wore him down with telling body punches. Batchelor had an effective right swing and left; Jab which proved very damaging when they connected. Both contestants forced the pace, and although the winner took a lot of punishment, he completely out-boxed Batchelor in the closing rounds. Both shaped better than they did in the semifinals. WELTER-WEIGHT. J. Davie 10.5 boxed an exhibition bout with A. Lowe, and P. C. Sutherland-11.3 fought in similar fashion with J. P. Kennedy 11.4. heavy-weights: Final. A. M. Hartnell 13.2 beat C. J. Aitken 12.10. The winner made the very best use of his extra weight and had his opponent on the run from the outset. Towards the close ot the first round a knock-out seemed imminent, but the bell saved Aitken, who was fighting a losing battle with great grit. Hartnell forced the pace all the time, and several times treated Aitken a good deal more kindly than was necessary. THE OTAGO ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the executive of the Otago Boxing Association was held last night, Mr F. J, Campbell presiding. The Match Committee reported that arrangements had been completed for two professional contests, in the first of which Wally Hancock, of Australia, will meet Reg. Trowern. This bout, which will take place on April 15; in the Town Hall, will be followed a week later by a bout between Hancock and Ted Morgan, Hancock is due to leave Sydney on Friday., The chairman reported that negotiations were proceeding for a bout between Tommy Donovan and Pete Sarron in Dunedin, and a definite announcement would be made in a day or two. The secretary of the Otago Rugby League wrote offering the use of the League’s stadium for the proposed bout, and it was decided to consider the offer at a meeting of the executive on Tuesday night. .... Mr C. MTvor tendered his resignation as a member of I the executive, and Mr J. Glover was elected in his place. SABRON’S INJURED HAND. STILL CONSIDERABLY SWOLLEN. (Peb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 1. Pete Sarron, the American boxer, has had his injured left hand medically examined, and it is now in a. pack. It is still considerably swollen and it will be five weeks at least before he will be able to enter the ring again. If his hand recovers he will be prepared to meet Tommy Donovan in a return battle, as Sarron is naturally anxious to wipe out last Saturday's defeat. Though nothing has yet been definitely settled, it is probable that the contest will be staged in Dunedin, but ■the lateness of the season may prevent the contest from taking place in the open air.
