BAND RECITALS.

Favoured by gloriously fine weather the band concert given by the Port Nicholson Silver Band at the Botanical Gardens yesterday afternoon was very well patronised by the public, a particularly enjoyable recital being presented. Following on the popular overture “Morning, Noon and Night” (Suppe), the band gave a novelty selection entitled “ Slidin’ Thro’ the Rye,” both items being greeted with * applause. Bandsman T. Goodall gained a popular reception in a comet solo, “Ethelinda,” after which the band was then heard in a very dignified rendering of the hymn “ Nearer My God to Thee.” A selection of Rossini’s works, a novelty item, “ The Whistling Farmer Boy,” and the waltz “ Carolina Moon ” were then given with excellent effect, the concert march “The Scindian” completing a most enjoyable programme. During the day other bands which had participated in the Dominion band contests gave recitals at various places in the city. In the morning the Timaru Municipal Band gave a number of excellent selections at the Public Hospital, whilst in the afternoon the Invercargill Civic Band and the Woolston Band occupied the St. Kilda and the St. Clair rotundas respectively, the large crowds which had proceeded to the seaside being treated to splendid musical programmes. In the evening the Invercargill Civic Band also gave a recital in the Empire Theatre, good-support from the public being forthcoming.
