A SERIOUS PROBLEM
UNEMPLOYMENT IN AMERICA. HAND OF MOSCOW IX EVIDENCE. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) WASHINGTON, March 1. (Received March 2, at 11.53 p.m.) , Unemployment—that spectre behind* the recent Wall street collapse—has finally materialised. Unemployment has become a problem, and of a variety of announcements to-day appears a serious one. It is true that during past months there were so-called “ Reds and unemployed ” riots in Chicago, Detroit, and New York. The demonstrators in most cases were young irresponsibles, the actual unemployed who participated being few. Some interest lias been aroused by the announced intent of American Communists to take their cue .from the Internationale in' Moscow and organise nationwide demonstrations next Thursday. All this has tended to becloud the real and vital question as to the extent of the nation’s unemployed, and how it can be remedied. Therefore the American Federation of Labour issued a survey to-day indicating that unemployment had reached a point of “serious danger.” During February 82 per cent, of the union members and 43 per cent, of the union building trades men were out of work. There is no immediate help for the unemployed except through charity. The relief organisations are literally swamped with appeals, and are sending ■urgent requests for funds.
