LAWN TENNIS.

AUSTRALIA BEATS NORTH ISLAND.

EIGHT RUBBERS TO FOUR.

D. G.-FRANCE DEFEATS KALMS.

(Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON. March 2. In perfect weather on Saturday the lawn tennis matches between Australia and the North Island were concluded in a victory by the visitors by eight rubbers to four. The outstanding feature of the; day was D. G. France’s defeat of F. Kalms, Starting badly, he played brilliantly for the next two sets, outclassing the Australian with the speed and cleverness of his all-court play. Kalms was forced on to the defensive and into errors. France made very few mistakes. Spicule, by his brilliant placements and speed of foot, defeated Malfroy with ease, Malfroy getting the second set more by attacking play on hia part and a slackness on the part of Sproule, who did not worry. Wilson beat Teague by aggressiveness in driving, smashing, serving, and volleying, compelling Teague to play always from the backhne. • Brilliant corner to corner driving and. excellent volleying and smashing gave Stedman an easy Victory over Donohue, who made errors on the run. The Doubles were brilliant exhibitions of close volleying, having the spectators greatly excited. The North Island came very close to winning, but failed on the vital points through over-eagerness. Stedmau was brilliant in his match with Wilson against Sproule and Donohue. Results (North Island names being mentioned first): — SINGLES. D. G. France beat F. Kalms, 2 —6, 6—l. 6—2, . C. E. The lawn tennis match between Otago and Southland, played at the Anderson’s Bay courts on Saturday, resulted in an easy win for the home team by 19 matches to four. Owing to the lateness of the hour one of:the adies’ singles was abandoned, so that there were only 23 matches. As a result of a late start in the morning only the mixed doubles could be disposed of before lunch, and consequently is was considerably after 6 p.m, when play came to an end. The' weather conditions throughout the day were perfect, although •in the forenoon the heat made play very strenuous. The standard of" play was good on both sides. The relative merits of the two teams cannot be correctly gauged from the scores, since the visitors gave a much better account of themselves than the match totals would suggest. Perhaps the most noticeable feature of the Southland players’ performance was the very marked extent to which they tired, particularly in the latter half of the afternoon. Very frequently it was the third set that provided the home players with the opportunity to carry off the match. In the men’s singles Otago had little difficulty in scooping the pool. The match between Bray and Sumpter attracted a good deal of attention, but it was obvious _ that the strenuous play of the morning and afternoon had left the southerner considerably less fit than his opponent. M'Dougall disposed of Townshend in quick time as the score indicates. One of the surprises of the day was the defeat of Miss Partridge by Miss Guest. _ The Southland lady forced the pace in the first set and won fairly easily, but she found her opponent far from easy in the second, which she won 6—5 after a very evenly contested set. The match between Miss Cook and Ming Blackie could not be played owing to the fact that Miss Cook’s doubles game was not concluded until 6 p.m. Sumpter and Miss Melvin had to play good tennis to beat M'Dougall and Miss Pattison. The match went to a third set, which provided the keenest tussle of the day, the verdict going to the visitors finally, 10—8, It was in the mixed doubles that Southland managed to assert themselves to the greatest degree, winning three matches out of the six, but the hard play in several of these had its effect later In the day.
