JOHN M'GLASHAN COLLEGE.
The monthly meeting of the John M’Glashan College Board was hold in First Church Hall yesterday. The chairman of the hoard (Mr T. G. Ross) presided. 1
The principal (Mr Gilray) reported an increase in the school roll. The year opened on February 4, with 134 names on riie roll, 54 of these being boarders, xlieie M'ero 80 in the secondary school and 54 in the primary department. The staff was the same as last year, with the addition of Mr A. D. G. Blanc who was teacher of biology, and Mr g’ W. Johnstone, who was ‘in charge of loicc production and speech training. In the November and December examination results, the principal reported that satisfactory returns had been obtained. E. M. Elder gained fourth place in the University National Scholarship list, and W. S. Gilkison and J. M. b. Ross obtained credit passes. ■Higher leaving certificates were awarded to 10 members of Form VI
At the break-up ceremony on Decern-n/-i .In Charles Fergusson, Bart., G.C.M.G., had addressed the school, and Eady Alice Fergusson had presented the prizes. He then inspected the cadets, who paraded as a guard of honour and complimented them on their steadiness on parade. Sir Charles and Ladv Alice hergusson had shown very great interest in the college, ami had since presented their signed photographs to the school, and had also been pleased to piesent a.beautiful silver challenge cup as a prize for the newly established class in biology. The cup was inscribed on the one side with the Vico-Remil arms ,and on the other with the Femisson crest. °
Last year’s Form VI hart presented to the college library five valuable volumes of essays as a mark of their appreciation of the facilities offered by the library. Mrs T. C. Ross had given to the library Mr Stanley Baldwin’s volume of addresses entitled “On England.”
Seven N.C.O.’s from the college had attended the secondary school camp at Burnham, and C. O. Hutton, one of last year s N.C.O.’s, had attended the course tor cadets seeking commissioned rank and had passed the practical tc«t The principal intimated, in rtferriii" to the death of J. E. E. Blomfleld, who lost his life at Mount Cook, that the old boys intended to erect a memorial tablet in the college. It was stated that, thanks to Ihe generosity of several friends of the college, the new playing shed was now complete. It was a solid and roomy structure and would give ample accommodation.
