M.C.C. TOUR.

MATCH WITH TARANAKI. HOME TEAM’S POOR SCORE. (Per United Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, February 26. The final match of the M.C.C. tour against Taranaki was opened to-day in fine weather. Taranaki won the toss and batted on a good wicket. The team was all out for 13D, but the visitors made a bad start, the score being three wickets foi 47 at one stage. Turnball and Nichols made a stand, and the score at stumps was 164 for five wickets. The feature of the Taranaki innings was the splendid stand made by Nasmith, who played stylish and correct cricket for 59 before Barratt clean-bowled him. He hit eight boundaries, and was confident to all bowlers, giving an exhibition that compared more than favourably with most of the visitors’ performances.

Barratt maintained a splendid length, and secured the bowling honours. Duleepsinhji took two brilliant catches in the slips, the spectators being amazed at the deft manner in which he snapped up the ball.

The first M.C.C. wicket fell at 32, Bowley being run out by a brilliant throw-in by Young. Duleepsinhji received a great ovation. He survived a confidential appeal for Ibw on his first ball, and lifted one to mid-on when he had scored only two. After three wickets had fallen for 47 Turnbull and Nicholls took the total past the century, the former playing a confident, but steady, innings. He frequently found third man’s gully by perfect timing of off balls, and subsequently explored the long field with enterprise and judgment. At 103 Barker clean-bowled Nichols, and Gilligan helped Turnbull to carry the score to 154, when he succumbed Ibw. Turnbull was batting comfortably at 65 when stumps were drawn.
