THE EVANSDALE-MERTON ROAD.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I notice in your issue of the 24th inatant that “ Motorist ” has ventilated a very just grievance when he complains of the condition of the Evansdale-Mertou road. Apparently the Waikouaiti County is in a very sound financial position if one may gauge it from the amount of metal it is allowing to be wasted over the hanks on this road. Surely an engineer with road experience should know that if no blinding is used on metal it is almost an impossibility to expect it to bind. If the metal was blinded with the gravel, which is abundantly obtainable out of the Waikouaiti River, then the money now spent on metal would be well applied. The exercise of a little commonsenso on the part of those responsible would save the taxpayers’ money and the country’s metal. I may mention that this road is becoming very popular among motorists, because of the scenic views obtainable, and as they are the contributing factor it is only fair that their money should not be wasted ae in this case, which is one of “ shillings wise and pounds foolish.” —I am, etc., Another Motorist.
