TRAGEDY ON TASMAN GLACIER: PROPOSED MEMORIAL.

TO THE EDITOR Sib, —The tragedy which caused the deaths of Miss Doris Brown, of North Canterbury, Miss Mary.. Monteath, of Christchurch, Miss Keane, of Christchurch, Miss D. Smith, of Auckland, and E. Blomfield, acting guide, Dunedin, through to bad weather on the Tasman Glacier is so recent that details will still be fresh in the minds of the public, though it is, not generally known that, following the fine tradition of Alpine guides to do all that is possible to protect those in their charge, Acting Guide Blomfield gave up some of fyis clothing in hopes of saving the lives-of those with him.

Proposals have been made to appeal to friends-of, and sympathisers, with, the victims to provide funds to erect a suitable memorial to the memory of the party, and the New Zealand Alpine Club has been asked to father the movement, and has gladly - consented-to do so. H; is proposed to erect a hut at the site of the old bivouac - at De la Beebe corner,” near the scene, of the tragedy, to be available for the use of climbers, subject to proper regulation, so that they can use it free of charge by providing tneir own food and equipment, the New Zealand Alpine Club to have control of the hut.

, It is estimated, that'the cost will be f4OO, and the undersigned invite all those who approve of the proposal to send in subscriptions to any one of the signatories of this appeal, who will at once acknowledge receipt. The smallest sums will be welcome, and the fund will be held m trust by the New Zealand Alpine Club until such time as it is in a position to put the work in hand.
