THEFT FROM A STEAMER.

WATERSIDE WORKERS FINED. £lO OR ONE MONTH IN GAOL. ’ (Special to Dailt Times.) WELLINGTON, February 25. While on duty on the Glasgow wharf yesterday evening Defective Sergeant Tricklebank and Constable Ritchie noticed three men leave the Bangitane with something apparently concealed underneath their -coats. Subsequent inquiries led to the appearance in the Magistrate’s Court to-day of three waterside workers who were charged with stealing lamb and butter, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The men were Albert Edwards, .aged 65, who admitted stealing two legs of lamb aqd 3 lb of butter, valued at 15s, Henry William Burroughs,” aged 46, who pleaded guilty to the theft of two legs of lamb and Sib of buter valued at £1 Gs, and Victor Toleher, aged 41, who admitted stealing one leg of lamb and 81b of butter, valued at £1 Is. Chief-detective Lopdell said that the box of butter which must have' been ■broken up, could not be found, and it seemed that others .must have participated. The carcass from which the legs ,of lamb were taken could not be found either. Ths men had taken the goods from the Rangitane. Their wages sheets for the past 13 weeks showed that they coiild riot have been ih want.

Without comment, Mr E. i?age, S.M., fined each .of the accused £lO, id default one month’s imprisonment. A fortnight was allowed each in which to fined the ' money.
