PROGRESSIVE CANADA.

RAILWAY COMPANY'S ACTIVITIES. NEW ATLANTIC LINER. Lieutenant-colonel J. Sclater, D. 5.0., traffic manager in Australia and New Zealand for the Canadian-Pacific Railway Company, who is at present'in Dunedin, states that his company is exerting every effort to make the "All-Red route" from England to Australia and New Zealand the finest of its kind in the world. To this end the company is now arranging for the building of several 40,000-ton liners to run in the Southampton-Quebec service", and the first of these large steamers" will be the Empress of Britain. The company already had a vessel of this, name, but it is now known as the Mount Royal. The new Empress of Britain will have a speed of 26 knots.. enabling her to make the transatlantic trip in slightly less than five days, and she has oeen planned to equal the finest liners sailing out of New York. The magnificence of the liner's appointments can be gauged from the fact that world-famous artists have been 'appointed to design the public rooms. Sir John Lavery will be responsible for the decoration of the magnificent ballroom, "Mr Frank Brangwyn, designer of famous murals, in many London buildings, will create the decorative scheme for the firstclass dining saloon, Mr W. Heath Robinson, the famous cartoonist, will have charge of the cocktail bar, and Mr Sdmond Dulac, the illustrator of a fine edition of the " Rubaiyat," has been commissioned to design the decorations fo* the smoking room. , " The liner throughout will be in keeping with the decorations," Colonel Sclater said. "She may not be quite as fast as the German liner Bremen, whieh at present holds the transatlantic speed record, but there will be none better appointed. The Empress.of Britain will make hermaiden .voyage next year. "The- building of this ship is of more than passsing importance to New Zealand. The Canadian Pacific Company caters extensively for the tourist traffic to Australia and New Zealand, and every year the service is increasing in popularity. The new liner ordered by the Union Company for the Vancouver run will also attract more tourists. Improvements in the train service across Canada are being carried on continuously, and larger and more powerful engines are now being provided to haul the heavy steel carriages across the continent in 80 hours. The company co-operates closelv with the New Zealand Government Publicity Department, and_ films dealing with the Dominion's scenic attractions are shown regularly on the Atlantic steamers." Referrine to the prosperity of Canada, Colonel Sclater states that it is goin" through an era of development unknown hitherto. Vast mineral resources have been discovered in the barren lands nortli of Lake Superior, and there is a noticeable absence of unemployment. Colonel Sclater says that not so many years ago thousands of the brightest Cana-' dian young men went across the border to take positions in the United States, but it was very gratifying to learn that they were now returning to their homeJand where the prosperous conditions enabled them at once to find employment On the other hand, there was a" large amount of unemployment in the United States Colonel Sclater sneaks enthusiastically of the future of Canada, and it is indeed pleasing to hear him tell of ths wonderful progress of our great sister : Dominion.
