ACCLIMATISATION* I.V AUSTRALIA
(From: Ovr Own Correspondent.) SN TJNEV. December l‘J
A brilliant feature of Sydney's Botanic Garden’s just now is New Zealand's Christmas bush, the Pohntukawa. in all the glory of its flaming, scarlet flowers. For years Australian experts have been advocating strongly the planting of this tree. The display in the Botanic Gardens is witness to the wisdom of their recommendation. The pohntukawa, at first glance, is not unlike the more familiar giant bottle-brush, but a closer inspection reveals a tree of much greater strength and character. The hope is expressed by botanists that the tree will lind Australian-wide favour. When the buds break they throw out a fringe of pin-like petals which, clustered together produce a flower that makes an immediate appeal to the eye. Metrosideros tomentosa ie the botanical name, under which the pohntukawa is now heinf catalogued and sold in Sydney.
