POST OFFICE BALANCE SCALES.

TO THE EDITOR. SIB, —The matter of the Post Office balance scales to which reference is made in a local in your issue of the 11th inst. is one that wo have been up against for some considerable time. My hrm poets from 30 to 40 parcels every week, and we have had from time to time considerable trouble over the weights of these parcels, and have been charged as much as 8d extra on a parcel owing to the Post Office spring balance scales being incorrect. The writer tested the scale* at a branch post office in this city. He took down his I2lb weights, which had just been passed by the inspector of weights and measures, and this post office registered the weight at 121 b soz, As a matter of fact, if any business firm in this city used the scales this post office was using it would be liable to a heavy fine at the instance of the inspector. We trust, therefore, that your local will have its influence on the Government officials, and lead to all weights being inspected yearly by the inspector of weights and measures. Another matter over which wo have a considerable amount of trouble is the way parcels are knocked about during transit. We are quite aware that if we pay 6d “fragile” they may have a better passage, but this is out of the question for us, as it would mean too much extra cost to us, and we could not compete with oilier firms in various parts of the Dominion, The Postal Department say* “Advertise by Post,” but it docs not look after its customers as we have to look after ours.—l am, etc., W. A, Grieve, Colombo Tea Company. Uuncdtn, December 14.
