STRANDED TRAWLER
BRAVERY OF SIX SAILORS
BOAT ROWED THROUGH STORM.
(United Press Association.)
(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, November 5. (Received Nov. 5, at 11 p.m.) A story is told of the great bravery and determination of six sailors who manned a lifeboat from the steamer Saros on Sunday night and went to the assistance of the crew of the stranded trawler Gunundaal in a raging sea. About 10 p.m. the captain of the Saros saw distress signals in the vicinity of the beach on Gabo Island, and a lifeboat with the chief officer and five of the crew put off in pitch darkness. They rowed for three hours, being drenched and cold. The boat was tossed like a cork but eventually they located the trawler on a reef. Her lights were all extinguished but when the lifeboat was unable to get alongside the men shouted through the darkness to those on board the trawler and the reply came " no assistance wanted, thank you.” The men iu the lifeboat then commenced to row back to their vessel in the thickest weather and they reached it safely after a terrible battle with the wind and the waves for four hours. The trawler’s crew reached Sydney today, little worse for their experience.
