GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH.

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last night in the Council Chambers, and wa* attended by the Mayor (Mr W. O. Smelhe) and Cr s J. L. Miller, T. Tomkins, J. Passmore. A. Logie, D. Stewart* J. Lindsay, T. M'Ahan, and P. F, Bennett.

Accounts amounting to £1248 17* Id were passed for payment. There was some discussion regarding an application received by the council from an advertising concern for a lease of a certain site at Concord for an advertising hoarding to be erected. The general opinion of members was that it would be unwise to allow advertising of this nature m the borough, and it was decided to' decline the oSer made. r i H cs , s 0 rfi Lothian and_ Scott’s tender of £l-1 18s for the erection of convenience* and a strong room- at the Council Chambers was accepted, and the tender of Mr m £ 32, for painting the Council Chambers, was accepted. „ Th , e lender of Messrs John Duthie and Co. (Wellington), of £lB3 11s 7d. for the supply of water mains and fittings, was accepted.

~ The town clerk submitted a report on the question of, undertaking a programme ot tree planting in such streets in the borough as lent themselves to such a scheme, and also on the acquiring of the land surrounding the Soldiers’ Memorial for the purpose of a public park. There were two streets in particular in which tree planting could be started. These were Scotland terrace and Punciman street, at Abbotsford. In the case of the former street, the ratepayers had already offered their co-operation in the matter. The question of finance should not present any difficulty.—Both proposals were referred to the Finance Committee for consideration.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. The borough engineer (Mr F. J Williams) reported as follows for the month:—

Duuedin-Invercargill Main Highway.— ihe only work done on the tar-sealed portion was the spreading of fines to take un the bleeding of the bitumen which occurred during the very hot weather, inat part of the road in which road oil was added to the bitumen in order to B it ur . e j P®y®tration was the portion affected. The Railways Department has u tar macadam some of the Walton Park crossing, and a letter has been received from the district engineer agreeing to pay the cost of keeping this m . ° r j 6r i provided that estimates are submitted from time to time. The district engineer, Public Works Department, has advised that specifications are required for the proposed sealing for this season, these will be supplied during the incoming month. Brown’s Hill section has been kept graded in and gives excellent runnim; surface. Green fsiand-Taieri Mouth Main Highwaj\—ihe usual maintenance work has been done on this highway, and it is in good order.

Slip Near Ross’s Corner.—The elip in front of Mr J. Poland’s residence lias been examined, and the material appears to be eliding on the marl formation. In order to remedy the trouble it will be necessary to erect a concrete wall approximately 30 feet in length. The estimated cost of this work is £SO. General Works.— Runciman street has been graded, metalled, and blinded, and *f ° ow > n s°°d order. The culvert in James street has been finished, while the repairs to this street from iJeill street have been completed. Kaikorai Valley road has been attended to. In Scotland terrace a six-inch storm water drain has been laid, the pipes being found by the occupier fronting the area. A start has j? e ®u ?? a 4 e 'f’tb the formation of the lootpath in Harraway’s road, and It will be completed during this week. . S *! ee i-T TE , e nation of repairs to Burns street has been held over in the meantime, as the amount allocated ’ for this work might better be expended in improving the sanitary conditions ox the street. In the event of this street improvement being carried out, the dbcharge from the houses would still flow along the sides of the street, and the sauiThT conditions would not be improved. The position is a difficult one because it ™?„ be ? n Practice to do this work only when the material has been found wonting the street improved. The estimate of the cost of laying the storm water drain is £6O. . Drainage in Abbotsford.—The drainage m Browns street. Miller street, and ■Keeve street, comprising chiefly the new railway settlement, is causing a considerable amount of trouble, and it is-utp-parent that some measures will have to be adopted to keep this area in a eanicondition. It appears that the onlyway out of the difficulty i a to lay a storm water dram in Brown and Miller streets fh« «* <st,mated ?? st £175 - far the ratepayers will assist in carrying out the work would be a matter for negotiation, and it must be further remembered that any scheme carried out here should be submitted to the Railways Department, as the whole of the sewerage flows on to railway land, and must continue to do so.
