MOTOR CAR COLLISION.

ELECTRIC LIGHT POLE SMASHED. OCCUPANTS DISAPPEAR. Travelling at a high rate of speed, a Stuclebaker sedan motor ear, which was later discovered to be the property of Mr A. C. Hanlon, struck an 8-ineh by 8-inch ironbark electric light pole at the junction of the high and low roads at the Normanby tram terminus shortly after 9 o’clock last night. The pole was snapped in two and the lower portion was lifted bodily from the ground. The car continued its" career for a distance of about 30 yards, where it struck an iron pole supporting the overhead tram wire, the engine being smashed out of all recognition. - It is understood that the occupants of the car, who had not been identified last night, left the vehicle and disappeared, but it is also alleged that a young man, with a cut and bleeding face, arrived later, while the constable in charge was absent, and inquired if Mr Hanlon had arrived. Shortly after 9 o’clock, Constable Harris, of North-East Valley, received advice that a car was on fire at the Normanby terminus and he immediately summoned ■ the brigade. . When the machine reached the scene it was found that there was a small blaze which was speedily extinguished; some of the wiring being damaged by the flames. There was some blood. on the windscreen. As a result of the damage done to' the electric wiring when the pole was broken, the lights on the Upper Junction road and in the houses were put out of action.
